Mangalore, Aug 3:
Yenepoya University, Yenepoya Medical College, and Department of Community Medicine of Besant Women's College, jointly organised 'World Breast Feeding Week' at the conference hall of Besant Women's College, in the city.

Inaugurating the programme, Dr Ghulam Jilani Kadiri, principal, Yenepoya Medical College, said that lack of breast feeding causes malnutrition in India which is at 43 percent while in China it is 7 percent and in African countries it is 28 percent. "This way India is lagging behind. Hence, every mother in India should breast feed for the normal development of her child," he added.

"Breast feeding also prevents the child from being exposed to diseases and the mother will enjoy the joy of bonding with her child," said Dr Kadiri. He also said that the proper method of breast feeding should be followed by every mother and chances of developing breast cancer are more in mothers who do not breast feed their child.

Dr Soudha Alam Nawaz of Yenepoya Hospital spoke about the technical way of breast feeding. Dr Manjula K T, principal, Besant Women's College, released a pamphlet on the topic. M Srinivas, department of food and nutrition, government of Karnataka, was also present.
