Mangaluru: Endosulfan victim rape accused awarded ten-year rigorous jail term

Mangaluru, Sep 12: The second additional district and sessions special judge Preeti K P sentenced the accused of raping an endosulfan victim to ten years of rigorous imprisonment.

Rajesh Rai (33), a resident of Peruvayi, Bantwal taluk is the accused. A case that he had raped a 19-year-old endosulfan victim residing in his hometown on October 1, 2015 was registered against him.

It was alleged that Rajesh, who knew that the girl was alone at home had raped her promising to marry her. Prakash Devadiga, the then SI of Vittal police station had registered a case. The then ASP Rahul Kumar conducted investigations and submitted a charge sheet under SC/ST Act. Fourteen witnesses out of 27 witnesses in the charge sheet were heard.

The judge pronounced that the accused was guilty on September 7 and awarded rigorous imprisonment of ten years under IPC section 376(2), asked him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 and undergo additional rigorous imprisonment of three months under section 448. The court has also ordered the legal services authority to pay compensation to the victim. Government prosecutor Jyothi Pramod Nayak argued the case for the government.
