Bangalore: DVS Promises Chairman for Backward Classes Commission in a Week

Bangalore, Aug 20: Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has promised to appoint the Chairman for the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, which has been vacant for over a year, within a week.
Addressing a function to mark the 96th birth anniversary of former chief minister D Devaraj Urs in Bangalore on Saturday, the chief minister said the Government would identify a suitable person to head the panel in a week’s time.
The Backward Classes Commission was set up as a permanent panel under the mandate of the Supreme Court.
The chairman of the panel C S Dwarakanath stepped down on July 9 last year after completion of term and the post is yet to be filled.
The Chief Minister said Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned for constructing the Devaraj Urs Memorial at Kallahalli, a native place of Urs, in Mysore district. A sum of Rs 5 crore has been allotted for the project.
Bharati Urs, daughter of Devaraj Urs, appealed to the Chief Minister to participate in the unveiling ceremony of the memorial after completion of all works.
The Chief Minister also conferred D Devaraj Urs Award on former Primary and Secondary Education Minister H G Govinde Gowda for his contributions in various fields, particularly in education.
The award was given to Govinde Gowda, who is known as “Malnad Gandhi” on the occasion of 96th birth anniversary of chief minister late Devaraj Urs. The award comprised a purse of Rs 1 lakh and a citation.
Govinde Gowda, born on May 25, 1926, hails from a small village in Chikmagalur district and participated in the freedom struggle. He was elected to the State legislative Assembly in 1983 and 1995 and served as the Minister in the J H Patel government. During his tenure, a large number of teachers were recruited in a transparent manner.
The Chief Minister also presented four divisional level awards to four personalities – M S Halavar (Mysore), former Bangalore corporator Bangaramma (Bangalore), training unit for self-employment and Rural Development, Gadag (Belgaum) and Dhamaveer Chauvan (Gulbarga). The divisional level awards comprised cash award of Rs. 50,000 each and a citation.
Sadananda Gowda also facilitated students who secured highest marks in SSLC, PUC and post-graduation examinations by residing in hostels run by the social welfare department in the 2010-11 academic year.
Social Welfare Minister A Narayanaswamy recalled the contributions of Urs and said 100 students’ hostels would be established by spending Rs. 95 crore. A sum of Rs. 19.70 crore would be spent in each district to establish Dalit colonies by constructing houses, roads and other basic facilities.
