Mangaluru: DC mandates closure of liquor shops on Dasara procession day

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 21: In a proactive measure aimed at averting potential incidents resulting from alcohol consumption during the Dasara procession, deputy commissioner Mullai Mugilan has issued an order for the closure of bars, wine shops, and liquor outlets in the Dakshina Kannada district on the day of the grand procession.

As per the directive, all liquor shops, wine stores, and bars situated along the route designated for the Dasara procession will be compelled to remain closed.

Furthermore, the sale of any intoxicating substances will be strictly prohibited for the duration of the event. This move seeks to ensure the safety and orderly conduct of the Dasara festivities.

Administration should not listen to all time pass comments when taking this kind of actions. I have noticed during public functions like procession and election rally, youngsters barge into liquor shops, drink as much as they want and then go on rampage, causing public nuisance and many times violence. They also litter the place like crazy, leaving liquor bottles and spitting gutka. After ED decided to close liquor shops during election rallies, much of the disorder came under control. Same case with Dasara and other processions. So let the administration do what is effective. Nobody will die if drink is banned for one day.

In my opinion, it is a very wise and practical decision to stop sale of alcoholic drinks on the days of Dasara procession. Those who criticise this decision might say that those who want to drink would buy it in advance. That exactly is the point. Those who buy in advance and store it for a dry day are very measured in their actions, they will not normally to excesses in drinking. It is usually those who make a run to the wine shop on the spur of the moment, are the ones that make a show of their excesses and perhaps engage in some brawl or end up on the footpath.

I think the closure of liquor shops on Dasara procession day - a decision taken by people who never studied the liquor consumers. People who drink, always know how to procure and use it even on dry day. A childish decision by the Govt. We need another 50 years to become a matured society.

To hide their incompetency, administration resort to such measures. Most of the people want to enjoy the celebrations by having some drinks, there will be a few rowdy characters who are supposed to be controlled by the strict vigilance by the administration. Now onwards, it will be a trend to ban liquor on all celebrations including Diwali, Dasara, new year and Christmas! It will ease the jobs of police!

This is setting a wrong precedent. And the decision of shutting down bars and wine shops are not contributing to the cause in anyway. This is like running a school full of adults. The city administration must know people are not that dumb. Infact people buy and stock liquor a day or two before contributing to liquor being sold in black and also people end up drinking more than any other day. Request the DC to stop such old school methods.
