Bantwal, Oct 22: An interstate thief who entered the house and stole valuables was thrashed by the public and handed over to the police at Kadangadi of Manchi village.

Praveen, a native of Karakkal in Kollam district is the thief who was caught by the public. His accomplice escaped from the spot. The bike used in the act was also confiscated.

The thieves entered the houses of brothers Kamaruddin and Jalaluddin near Manchi Masjid. Both brothers are affluent and the houses are highly protected. The thieves entered the house and ransacked the cupboards. As they did not get anything valuable, they went out from the house. Later, they entered the house of Hamid and stole Rs 3000 cash, it is said.

Both the thieves used to arrive on a bike and used to pick houses in which inmates were not present and steal valuables.

On Saturday night, the no one was present in all the three houses. The families had been to their relatives’ houses. Hence, the lights were off.

Both the thieves entered the houses of brothers at around 7 pm when there was heavy rain and lightning. As they did not get anything there, they went to Hameed’s house and stole Rs 3000 cash. When they were going out of the house, one of Hamid’s relative saw the duo. The relative had arrived at Hamid’s house as he had asked him to put off the inverter because of heavy rains and thunder. When the relative arrived to put off the inverter, he saw two men running away from Hamid’s house. He alerted others. The thieves left the bike and started to run.

Both the thieves ran in different directions. One was caught by the villagers. The villagers started searching for the thieves in the night and were able to catch hold of one early in the morning. They beat him black and blue and got details of theft and handed him over to the police.

Rural police SI Harish visited the spot and conducted inspection. Canine squad and finger print experts arrived on the spot. Search is in progress for the other absconding thief.

Itis a good development that the public apprehended the culprit. But the public has no right to thrash him or to meet out any punishment to him, unless he was violent. It is a common feature in our country for some people to give vent to their sadistic propensities on such people when they are cought. People should remember that there is a law enforcement and judicial authority for that purpose.
