Gambhir Likely to be Ruled Out from ODI Series


Leicestershire, Aug 29 (IANS): India's opening batsman Gautam Gambhir is likely to return home as he is still struggling to recover from the concussion he suffered during the fourth cricket Test against England.

The left-handed batsman also missed the first two limited overs warm-up games against Sussex and Kent and is certain to miss the Twenty20 game against Leicestershire here Monday.

He has shown hardly any improvement and is still suffering from dizziness and blurred vision.

"He said that he could not see the ball at times when it came at full speed. He will be taken to an eye specialist in Manchester on Tuesday," team manager Shivlal Yadav was quoted as saying by ESPN cricinfo.

"Based on what the specialist says we will have to wait for the next step. As of now it seems difficult," Yadav said.

Gambhir hurt himself after he back-pedalled in an attempt to take a catch off Kevin Pietersen at mid-on on the second day of The Oval Test, Aug 19. He didn't open in both innings and batted lower down the order contributing little with the bat.

Gambhir is going to be the fifth Indian player to be ruled out of the series. Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag are missing the ODI series due to injuries.
