Rio de Janeiro, Aug 30 (IANS/EFE): The coach of Brazilian pro soccer club Vasco da Gama, Ricardo Gomes, is in serious but stable condition after undergoing emergency surgery following brain hemorrhage, officials said Monday.

Gomes played on the Brazilian national team and coached his country's Olympic soccer squad.

He suffered the hemorrhage Sunday night during Vasco's match with Flamengo.

The 46-year-old coach had to be removed from the Joao Havelange Olympic stadium in an ambulance, and he was taken to the nearby Pasteur Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He will remain under observation at least until Wednesday in the intensive care unit, according to his medical team.

The physicians said that only after a few days have passed will it be possible to determine whether Gomes will have any aftereffects from the incident and/or surgery.

In February 2010, the Vasco coach was admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital after suffering "a small cerebral vascular change" and he remained there for two days.
