Udupi, Dec 23: Both the MLA and former MLA from Udupi expressed strong discontent over Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's statement regarding the withdrawal of the ban on Hijab in the state.

Former MLA Raghupati Bhat emphasized, "The statement by CM Siddaramaiah is inaccurate. Karnataka has not imposed a ban on Hijab. The earlier BJP government implemented a uniform code. Wearing Hijab is allowed in public places and college campuses but not inside classrooms, as supported by the High Court. The CM's statement appears to be politically motivated for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, the matter is currently sub judice in the Supreme Court and cannot be withdrawn until a verdict is pronounced."

Bhat accused CM Siddaramaiah of attempting to sway Muslim voters and warned against potential friction between communities if the ban is lifted.

Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna reacted angrily, stating, "Once the order reaches us, we will respond fittingly. If any friction arises, the state government bears direct responsibility. Siddaramaiah's government lacks consideration for the country and the future of students. Congress is sowing seeds of division in society. There seems to be a connection between PFI and Congress."

On the other hand, Muslim leaders welcomed the statement on the withdrawal of the Hijab ban. Hussain Kodibengre, state secretary of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights, urged CM Siddaramaiah to issue a circular committing to his statement, ensuring that Muslim girls can receive education without fear.

Tehreen Begum, a former student who fought against the hijab ban in court, expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the Karnataka state government and saw it as a ray of hope for Muslim girls to pursue education without hindrance.
