Udupi, Sep 15:
The district administration convened a meeting with Dalit organizations here on Wednesday September 14 to address their various issues.  It was about six months ago that a similar meeting was held.

When deputy commissioner (DC) Dr Reju announced that media persons were barred from attending the meeting, Dalit organizations insisted that they be present on the occasion in order to cover their various issues.

However, as there were two stronger sects within Dalits, who demanded a ban on Udayakumar Kallura, leader of a sect, alleging that he is collaborating with naxals; tense situation prevailed.  The police intervened to calm the situation.  The sect opposing Udayakumar boycotted the meeting and DC Dr Reju had to adjourn the meeting.

SP Dr Ravi Kumar, zilla panchayat acting-CEO Pranesh Rao, assistant commissioner Prabhakar, Dalit leaders Jayan Malpe, and Sundar Gujjarabettu were present on the occasion.
