Udupi, Sep 19: “Internationally acclaimed artist late K K Hebbar has contributed immensely to society.  If the students develop early interest in art, they can become accomplished artists when they grow up,” said Fr Joswy Fernandes, parish priest, St Lawrence parish, Moodubelle, near here.
 
Fr Fernandes was speaking at the inaugural function of the painting contest that was held at St Lawrence Pre-University College on the occasion of the centenary birth anniversary of renowned artist late K K Hebbar here on Saturday September 17.

 
Devdas Hebbar, in his keynote address, said that the late Hebbar had a keen interest in art during his childhood days and pursued his early studies at UBMC Higher Primary School here and higher education in the city and Mysore.  “It’s due to the support of German missionaries that he did advanced training in arts overseas and became an internationally acclaimed artist,” he added.
 
Veteran artist K L Bhat inaugurated the arts competition on Saturday.
 
The late K K Hebbar’s daughter Rekha Hebbar, ZP member Stella Ida D’Souza, TP president Devdas Hebbar, Belle gram panchayat president Jacintha Aranha, Kannada culture department deputy director Shivarudrappa, Moodubele parish council vice-president Alphonse K Alva, parents-teachers’ Association president Shilpa Nayak, Udyavar Madhav Acharya, Rafael Aranha, Vivekanand Shetty, Arvind Ballal, Muralidar Upadhyaya, and Bernard D’Souza were the chief guests on the occasion.
 
Moodubelle Radhakrishna Upadhyaya briefed on the persona of the late K K Hebbar.  St Lawrence Pre-University College principal Fr Paul Sequeira welcomed the gathering.  Sunita Kamat proposed the vote of thanks.  Shyamala compered the programme.
