About Shanti Cathedral

Originally, three missioneries came to Mangalore and settled in a rented house in Mission Street, then known as Nireshwalya, in the city in 1834. In course of time, a new church building was built and consecrated on December 1862 at its present location, known as Bell Mount then.

Thereafter, several churches have come up, to accommodate growing number of members living in the city outskirts. Various other churches too came into being in course of time. Under the guidance of the pastorate committee, various activities are being conducted in the churches successfully, like Sunday school, youth get-together, womens get-together etc.

Its strange that people always try to give a communal color to whatever article published in this forum.By the way Dushera and other festivals were not celebrated in the south of Vindhyas till probably 50 years back or so whereas Harvest is being celebrated since 150 years..

I have known The Shanti Cathedral for decades - for at least eighty years from the time I was a child. It has not changed in any way. I have known a few friends belonging to this Faith and it is always a pleasure to meet them and to interact with them. There is some kind of brotherhood between them and me. I have also known The Church dignitaries like Bishop Emeritus Christopher. Indeed he is a peoples' man and during his tenure I had the pleasure to invite him to preside over one of our Sodality meetings.

Now Bishop Stephen Sadanand has taken his place and indeed it is a pleasure to meet him sometimes. Both Bishop Christopher and Bishop Sadanand gave my wife and me great pleasure with their presence at our Diamond wedding when they were in the sanctuary along with Bishop A.P.D'Souza and Bishop Derek Fernandes amd several priests.

It is good to see the harvest festival celebrated at this Church. After all it is through the blessings of The Lord that we are able to reap good harvests to keep the people away from hunger and want.

I join scores of people in wish Bishop Sadanand and his flock a A VERY HAPPY FEAST.
