Mangalore, Oct 4: "The fact that ‘Kadandale Award’, instituted in memory of the late K J Shetty, who was a journalist and environmentalist with social concern, is being conferred on young journalist Steven Rego is an important matter", said religious leader Harikrishna Punaroor.

He was speaking at the ceremony held to confer the K J Shetty Kadandale Award, held at Yugapurusha auditorium, Kinnigoli, near here, on Sunday October 2.

Steven Rego, sub editor, Vijaya Karnataka, Kannada daily, city bureau, said in acknowledgement that these kinds of awards are essential to motivate young journalists to excel in their profession.

Vedamurti Laxminarayan Asranna of Durgaparameshwari temple, Kateel, graced the occasion.

Fr Valerian Mendonca, director, Sandesha Foundation, presented the award to Rego on the occasion.

Udupi District Working Journalists’ Association president Kiran Manjanabail, P Satish Rao, Suragiri Vasu Shetty, Jagdish Shetty Kenchanakere, Salettoor Jayaram Shetty, Sainat Shetty, and the late K J Shetty’s son Taranat Shetty Kadandale were present on the occasion.

‘Yugapurusha’ magazine editor Kodettoor BhuvanabiramaUdupa welcomed the gathering. Narendra Kerekadu read the citation letter. Laxman B B proposed the vote of thanks. Vijaya Kalavidar president Sharat Shetty compered the programme.
