Karkala, Oct 7: In a tragic incident that occurred at Mundli village near Ajekar in the taluk on Wednesday October 6, a woman and her small child met watery graves.

Asha (24), wife of Krishnaiah Acharya, who is a school bus driver by profession, was a resident of Kalikamba Janata Colony in Mundli village. The couple had two male children. Asha’s elder son, aged three years, had been sent to Asha’s elder brother's house on Thursday for participating in a puja organized there.

Asha was washing clothes near an open well, even as her younger son, Vineeth (18 months), was playing nearby. She failed to notice that the child had ventured near the well, which has no protective wall or cover. When the child suddenly lunged forward and plunged into the well, Asha, who was terror struck, jumped into the well to save the child. Both of them drowned, and their bodies were recovered later.
