Bangalore, Oct 7: Well-known Sanskrit scholar and Padma Shri awardee, Mathur Krishnamurthy (82), breathed his last on Thursday October 6 morning at a private hospital here. Krishnamurthy, who was suffering from lung infection since some days, was rushed to hospital after he encountered breathing problems in the wee hours on Thursday, but he could not be saved.

In his death, the cultural heritage of the state has lost a very important link. He is survived by his foster daughter, Janaki, relatives, and lacs of fans. His body was kept at the premises of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here till Thursday evening to enable people to pay their last respects. His body was later taken to Mathur in Shimoga district, where the funeral is slated to be held today.

Former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, hailed Krishnamurthy as a great soul, who remained unaffected by scores of awards and recognitions he won for his achievements. Union minister for corporate affairs, M Veerappa Moily, said that the death of this great scholar is a loss to the world of Sanskrit literature. He said Krishnamurthy had adopted modern value systems to Ramanayan and Mahabharat through his interpretations.

A large number of litterateurs, artists, politicians, actors, musicians, artistes etc including H D Deve Gowda, M V Rajashekharan, R Ashok, Y S V Datta, Narendra Babu, Sudha Murty, B Saroja Devi, paid their last respects to the departed soul.
