Mangaluru: NICO hosts ‘Wickets for Welfare’ charity cricket tournament

Mangaluru, Apr 23: The Nitte Institute of Communication (NICO), Nitte DU, organized 'Wickets for Welfare', an Intercollegiate Charity Cricket Tournament on April 20 and 21, at the KSHEMA grounds, Derlakatte. 

Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, vice president, Institutional Social Responsibility of Nitte (DU), and Fr Siby Kaitharan, director of Snehasadan inaugurated the programme. On the second day, Samuel Jayaraj, Cricket Coach was the chief guest of the function. He appreciated the unique initiative of playing cricket for charity, seeing it as a noble cause. Admiring the green campus of Nitte (DU) he said, “In the midst of the towering structures, the sight of green cricket field filled me with joy.”

Col B S Ghivari, assistant director, student affairs was the guest of honour. While addressing the gathering he said, “Sportsmen become good leaders due to the discipline and dedication they acquire along the way.”  He also mentioned that he hopes to see the girls team taking part in the next tournaments.  

The CSR sports event featured an overarm cricket league tournament, with teams playing 6-over matches using tennis ball. Professional colleges in and around Mangaluru participated in the league, promising fierce competition and a showcase of cricketing talent. The proceeds generated from the event will be directed towards supporting Snehasadan

Throughout the two-day match, the players exhibited remarkable sportsmanship. K S Hegde Medical Academy emerged as the champions, with A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences securing the runner-up position. The man of the match title was won by Pratham from KSHEMA. The players from ABSMIDS, Dr Anshuman Shetty was recognized as the best batsman and Dr Murtaza was awarded as the best bowler. Dr Sofi from KSHEMA was honored as the man of the series. The winning team selflessly donated their winning money to the charity. This event's success underscores the power of sports in driving positive change in society.

Prof Raviraj, head, NICO, Arfan Ahmed, Johnson Melroy D’Souza and Nikita, the student coordinators were also present.
