Bengaluru, May 1: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued warnings of severe heat wave conditions in the state from May 1 to May 5.
May 1: Red alert is issued as severe heat wave conditions are likely in Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Koppala. Orange alert is issued for Bellary, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Raichur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Chickaballapura, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur and Yadgiri districts.
May 2: Red alert is issued for Belagavi, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Koppal districts. Orange alert is issued for Bellary, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Raichur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Chickaballapura, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Yadgir districts.
- May 3: Red alert due to severe heat wave conditions is issued for Belagavi, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Koppal districts. Orange alert is issued to Bellary, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Raichur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Yadgir districts.
May 4: Red alert is issued for Belagavi, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Koppal districts. Yellow alert is issued for Bellary, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Raichur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Chickaballapura, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Yadgir districts.
May 5: Red alert is issued to Belagavi, Bagalkote, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Koppal districts. Yellow alert is issued to Bellary, Kalaburgi, Vijayapura, Raichur, Chitradurga, Davangere, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Mandya, Mysuru, Tumkur, and Yadgir districts.
Warm and dry conditions are likely from May 1 to May 5. Warm Night conditions will prevail for the next five days in the inner parts of North Karnataka. The severe heat wave conditions are likely to continue during the next five days.
Suggestions during heat wave conditions:
Avoid going out in the sun from 12 pm to 3 pm.
- Drink sufficient water even when not feeling thirsty.
- Wear thin, light, loose cotton clothes with holes.
- Wear protective goggles, shoes, or chappals and use an umbrella while going out.
- Avoid manual work during warm temperatures.
- Avoid working out between 12 pm and 3 pm.
- Avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks.
- Avoid food with high protein content and stale food.
- Wear a hat, cover your head, neck, face, hands, and legs with a wet cloth while working outside.
- Do not leave children and pets in parked vehicles.
- If you feel giddy or sick, contact the doctor immediately.
- Keep animals in shades and feed them sufficient amounts of water.
- Keep your residence cool. Use shutters, sunshade, and open windows at night.
- Use a fan and wet clothes and have a bath in cold water.
Treatment for sunstroke-affected person:
- Keep the person in a cool, shaded place and wipe him/her with a wet cloth.
- Pour water with normal temperature on him. Reducing the body temperature is important.
- Feed ORS, lime juice, soft drink, or such drinks.
- Carry the person to the nearest health center as heat waves can be fatal.
- Those who recover from heat waves should not expose their bodies in open spaces.
- Those who are working in cultivation should wear hats or carry umbrellas.
- Travelers should carry sufficient drinking water.
- Ordinary people can tolerate moderate heat, but the weak, infants, old people, and the sick should avoid it.
