Mangaluru, May 3: Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan, has instructed officials to ensure the uninterrupted supply of drinking water in the district.

Addressing the disaster management meeting held at the Mangala Auditorium, Mangaluru City Corporation, on Friday, May 3, he emphasized the necessity of curtailing unnecessary water usage. He warned of fines for those found misusing water.

The water issues have arisen due to insufficient rainfall and rising temperatures. People must avoid water misuse, and awareness about water conservation is crucial. Control rooms have already been established to address drinking water problems, and complaints received should be promptly resolved. A water rationing timetable should be prepared, ensuring water supply to all areas, he instructed the municipal commissioner.

Tahsildars and executive officers should set up control rooms at the taluk level to address water-related issues and compile a list of alternative water sources after assessing them, he added.

"Water is currently being supplied via tankers in Someshwar and Kotekar, where water scarcity is prevalent. Officials should ensure no shortages until the monsoon arrives. They should also review past incidents of landslides and similar events to be adequately prepared.

The fire brigade, forest department, Mescom, and health departments should be prepared for their respective duties. Boats should be on standby for potential flood evacuations, ensuring basic amenities are not lacking. A list of pregnant women and the elderly in areas lacking transportation facilities should be compiled, with medical facilities arranged for them," Muhilan said.

"Identifying houses in landslide-prone areas is essential, along with compiling contact numbers and details for potential evacuations. Drainage systems should be maintained, and cleaning efforts initiated. Tree branches near electric cables and poles should be trimmed to prevent hazards," he instructed forest department officials.

Municipal commissioner Anand C L, SP Rishyanth C B, and Puttur sub-division officer Jubin Mohapatra were present at the meeting.
