Mangalore, Oct 17: Heavy rain which lashed Karkala taluk on Sunday October 16 inflicted heavy losses at various places. Rain coupled with wind was experienced in Hebri, Muniyal and Ajekar. A woman named Sujata alias Ammu (35), residing near Shantipalke in Bailoor Jarkala, lost her life after lightning struck her when she was inside her house.

A house owned by Vasanti Acharya was damaged due to lightning. A house and cattle shed owned by Harish Rao, Bailadka in Kuntalpady also suffered extensive damages due to lightning. Wiring of the house was also damaged. Strong wind caused electric poles to fall to the ground at Hutturge and Belagundi. After a tree fell across the road at Jaravattu, traffic was affected. Fallen trees also damaged a number of houses, apart from a veterinary hospital and government PU college in Muniyal, Ajekar.

Udupi and Kundapur taluks in Udupi district got rain of lesser intensity. The city and surrounding areas, apart from Puttur and Beltangady taluks also accounted for rain coupled with lightning and thunder. Vittal and Subrahmanya were the other regions to get good rainfall on Sunday.

Whirlwind on Sunday evening caused uprooting of trees on two houses at Urpel Pade and Govugudde in Kallabettu village, Moodbidri. Tiles, beams of the roofs, extended tin roof etc., were damaged in the incident. Power break downs were a common phenomenon all along the coast.

The meteorological department said in a release that apart from Karnataka coast, several places in southern hinterland, and some more in northern hinterland are expected to get good rain along with thunder and lightning. This prediction is valid till Tuesday morning.
