Udupi, Oct 20: In an accident that occurred near Pangala Bridge near Kaup in the district on the evening of Wednesday October 19, a pedestrian was killed. Echchu Poojarthi (67), who used to reside near the old bridge of Pangala, and was a popular practitioner of native medicines, lost her life in the accident.

Poojrthi was walking by the side of the national highway 66, when she was hit by the iron rod of some machinery parts loaded onto a trailer truck. The woman suffered severe head injuries as the road hit her head hard. She fell down, and was writhing in pain, even as the driver of the vehicle which was moving towards Mangalore from the direction of Udupi, tried to flee from the scene. Inmates of another vehicle, who saw the accident, overtook the trailer truck, compelled the driver to stop, and then handed him over to the policemen.
