Kasargod, Oct 27: Mohammed Bevi Alias Mohammed Kunhi (43) was abducted by a gang for ransom on Monday October 24 night. He is a merchant based in Cherkala in the district. He is a resident of Pookatte in Kumble. His mother, who heard the news, collapsed. She could not recover from the shock.

Nebisa, mother of the businessman, came to know that her son was forcibly taken away by a gang which approached him in a Maruti Alto car when he was returning home after locking his shop, on Monday night. She collapsed to the ground. She was admitted into a hospital, but could not be revived.

The gang then took Mohammed to Poyinachi, Periya etc and called his home over phone, and placed a demand for a ransom of five lac rupees. When the family members tried to call Mohammed’s mobile number, they switched it off. The team, which realized that the policemen and the people were trying to locate their whereabouts with the help of mobile phone, dropped Mohammed at Kunia village on Tuesday, before speeding away. The people of the village, who saw Mohammed who was very weak and lying by the side of the bus stand, spoke to him and passed on information to his family.

It is learnt that Bevi had received threat from a gang about a week back, and he had filed a police complaint. A gang had beaten up his car driver in Bambrana a few days back. The policemen have identified Mohammed from Kumble Kodiyamme Chayikatte, as the main suspect in the case. They said that the suspect was accused of killing a Malappuam resident by hitting his head with a hammer, and then burning his body with the help of petrol in the past. They have taken two persons into custody and are questioning them on the basis of suspicion. They said they are also examining the involvement of underground elements in the abduction.
