Mangalore: Row over Muslim Tenancy - Police Commissioner to Take Action

Mangalore: Row over Muslim Tenancy - Police Commissioner to Take Action

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (PS)

Mangalore, Nov 2:
In the wake of reports regarding a flat owners' association in the city barring Muslims from taking tenancy in their flats, city police commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh speaking to daijiworld said that as police had not yet received any complaint on the issue, local police will now take action suo moto against the flat owners' association president.

"After the issue was exposed by the media, we expected someone to come forward and file a complaint. However, as no one has taken the initiative, police will exercise its power to act suo moto," he said.

He further said that action will be taken based on the report submitted by the police, and on the particular words used in the notification. The case would be criminal in nature, he added.

Meanwhile, Suresh Karkada, president of Prasad Apartment owners association told the media that the resolution wherein it was mentioned that no Muslims could be given flats on rent or lease was passed in a meeting in consultation with three Muslim owners staying in the apartments.

It is said that earlier, a Muslim family who were tenants troubled these three Muslim owners over some issues, after which they decided not to rent out flats to Muslims.

Following media reports on Wednesday November 2, the notice at the apartments was removed.

The sixth condition was underlined with red ink to ensure that the owners take note of the particular condition without fail.

The notice has remained in the apartment notice board for about eight months now, and surprisingly, no one had raised an objection to this illegal resolution till it was highlighted by the media.

dear how can you say that Muslims are trouble makers. Are all Hindus saints. No not at all. Why are you closing your eyes from Safron terrorits in many parts of india who are making trouble everywhere by damaging religious property of other religion.

Dont close your eyes, but keep it open. Do not do any partialityl. Bad people are there in every religion, but you cant blame whole community or religion for any sin of a single or few people. Be just and do the justice. Are you 100 percent correct, No, not at all.

Please let me know when you will available to sit and talk. There are some people among us who bear the different religions names to bring shame to the religion. They existed during olden days and now as well. They are called hypocrites or munafiq. Do not call them Hindus Muslims or Christians until you find out their cunning plot.

Being a Muslim is not a crime.I love my religion. But recent study has proved in all countries that My religion is misused and people have preached wrong message, which results in Jihad, war, Crime and atrocities.I am sorry for that.I pray that our Muslim brothers and sisters truly find peace and harmony among all religions and try not to hurt others. Why do our name comes in every crime? and discriminated list! I think we need to sit down and ask ourselves

This is a case of HUMAN RIGHTS. Whatever explanation that may be put forward there cannot be any discrimination with regard to the policy of tenancy in any area. I think the Police Commissioner has acted justly and has not any favoritism to any community. No Muslim, Hindu, Jain or christian should be discriminated and debarred from society.

The best thing that the Association could do was to have a panel to interview the prospective tenant and see the antecedents and then pass a resolution whether to accept an particular person to the association depending on the history.

Thank you Commissioner Seemanth Singh for giving a fair deal to people. Let us be democratic

Dear Raj Udupi..Let me tell you the threat to Mangalore is not from Terrorist it is from Nexals.. which we should all be concerned about. which is day by day nearing to Mangalore City which has almost reached Puttur. So we all by now know to which community the Nexals belong to. Terrorists have never been a threat to Mangalore. So your case is Invalid here. We should be precautious about nexals. So dont bring some stupid reasons to cover this blunder which people like you have done.

I request the Muslims to educate their children and guide them to win over others in a peaceful manner. Automatically the Muslims will be welcomed by the majority Hindus. Injustice, poverty and suppression are the main cause of anti-social tendency among few suppressed. Bring in all inclusive growth and see the changes.

Flat owners association passes resolutions based on Majority voting. It is not always ALL the residents are party to such resolutions.

That apart, I do know of two other associations, who have put down resolutions of slightly different nature, but discriminatory.

We have been crying foul about Australian treatment to Indians, I wonder what we shall call this?

Mangalorean community had always migrated on work, and that is why they have thrived. Imagine if Middle East, Mumbai, Bangalore house owners had passed resolutions of this nature. Would our Mangalorean families managed to come up in life at all?

How uncouth and ungrateful can we get? I can individually decide not to let out to so-and-so, but a registered housing society surely can't pass a resolution. It is against the constitution. But even before that, it is against humanity, do we have it in us?

Please do not make much hue & cry about this issue. In fact it has been decided or requested by the Muslim Tenants of this Building not to lease the flats to fellow Muslims since they encountered few problems from their own faith people. As usual without reading the full story we all started giving or blaming our own community of our own people. How funny isn’t?

One tenant troubling three Owners??? It sounds fake from all corners. This Suresh Karkada, president of Prasad Apartment owners association is fabricating a new story now just to save his and his apartments face. The story which he created itself sounds so stupid and this reflects his dirty mind against the other community. Lets be united (Hindu,Muslim,Christian) as Indians.

    Deepak Shetty/Mangalore,

I agree and respect your comments.
As you said, its flat owners who had to decide their business and their tenants. But it should be discreet and not open declaration. Open declaration causes embarasment and hate... Do it closely without the notification. If any muslim owned building if they put up a notice publicly denying tenency to non muslims, how would the denied community would feel. In some stances, wisdom should prevail and only verbal rules shall help and written laws created problems for tenants, occupants, and to the govt... silence some time is better than loud voice.... but at the end I agree that its upto the association to make a decission on who should be their tenents and who should be their neighbours.. pls make it quietly without a loud bang...

Dear readers...leave the tenants and the building association and president alone...its their building and their law ! respect it.Do not be like kids crying. When people suffer because of some reason by any community, its quite clear why this notice was issued. We have no business there in their affairs. If i was a flat owner I would support it too. After all its my buildings and my law !

People in Mangalore filled with pride, gossip and good in creating non sense situations from silly reasons. Now do not tell me you guys are law abiding, truthful and honest citizens !Stop bul..st...Just stop this nonsense

Media is powerful. Live long Daijiworld. An issue no one cared to report so far has now got the due attention. Appreciate Police Commissioner, Mr. Seemanth Kumar Sigh's swift action.

The justification of Suresh Karkada, president of Prasad Apartment owners association is trivial and does not hold water. If what he says to be believed, these three Muslim families of the apartment are not the governing body of 20 crore plus Muslims in India.

Anyway, there is no dearth of flats in Mangalore, and one should not worry much about it. But here the question is discrimination, such tendency creates a bridge between the communities, and Muslims are projected untouchable.

How long can we carry this baggage of hatred, jealousy and communal feelings. End of the day, we are one and have to live together for ever.Live happily and let others too.

The clarification given by Suresh Karkada, president of Prasad Apartment owners association is very childish and silly. That can never be a valid reason for putting such derogatory notice. If a particular family has troubled them they could have taken action against them. They cannot generalise all muslims and justify their action.
