Bantwal, Nov 21: The locals foiled an attempt to burgle a bank located at Muruva in Manila village, near here, in the wee hours of Saturday November 19.

The burglars broke open the main shutter and entered the branch of Karnataka Bank located in a building owned by Rama Bhat at about 12.14 am on Saturday.

A passerby, Ramayya Shetty, who observed some persons inside the bank premises informed the neighbours who gathered in front of the bank.  The burglars, who were busy searching for cash, saw the people outside fled from the rear entrance.

The burglars fled towards Adyanadka, leaving behind a getaway car bearing the registration number issued by an RTO in Kerala state.

The locals informed Vittal police who arrived at the spot and seized the car.

The canine squad and fingerprint experts are working on clues that might lead to the arrest of the burglars.  Vittal sub-inspector Rakshit A K expressed hope of nabbing the burglars at the earliest.

It’s the third time burglars have targeted this particular branch of Karnataka Bank. About seven years ago, the burglars had decamped with lacs of rupees.

The burglars, who were hitherto targeting houses and temples under Vittal police station, this time tried to burgle a bank.  It’s also significant that the robberies were held on the following a festival in Vittal. Police seized the car abandoned by the burglars.
