Mangalore, Nov 23: It is learnt that Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority run by the union government, has decided to set up a cold storage unit at the local airport. The measure, aimed at providing impetus to the export of indigenously produced perishable products, in all likelihood, will boost export of jasmine flower, fish, and local vegetables from Mangalore airport.

It is gathered that the authority, functioning under the ministry of commerce and industry, has written to the airport authorities here, seeking allocation of space to install the cold storage facility. The cold storage which is presently located in the old airport at Bangalore is planned to be shifted here, as the new airport at Bangalore has been equipped with a new cold storage facility. The authority plans to modernize the existing cold storage facility by investing about Rs 1.5 crore on its upgradation and maintenance.

The transportation cost of the storage facility with a capacity of 50 tonnes from Bangalore will be around Rs 28 lac. Airport director, M R Vasudeva, confirmed receipt of the said letter. He revealed that the same has been forwarded to the higher authorities, and further steps would be taken after receipt of reply thereof.
