Bangalore, Nov 23: For the legislative council seat vacated by BJP member, N Shankarappa, to pave way for the election of present Chief Minister, D V Sadananda Gowda as a member of the state legislature, election will be held on December 12.

It may be recalled that D V Sadananda Gowda, MP representing Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, had been sworn in as Chief Minister in place of B S Yeddurappa, who was indicted in the report of Lokayukta on mining irregularities, on August 4 this year. N Shankarappa, who represents assembly constituency, had resigned from his post on October 14.

The election notification for this election will be issued on November 25. December 2 will be the last day for filing of nominations. Nominations will be scrutinized the next day. December 5 will be the last day for withdrawal of nominations.

Polling will be conducted, if necessary, in room No. 106 of Vidhan Soudha from 9 am to 4 pm that day. Ballot papers will be used for the election, and counting will take place from 5 pm onwards on the same day.

For this election, members of the legislative assembly are eligible to cast their votes. In the 224-member assembly, BJP has a strength of 120 members, Congress 71, JDS 26, and six independents. One seat is vacant on account of the resignation of Sriramulu. As result of Bellary Rural bypoll will be announced on December 4, the MLA elected from that constituency will also be eligible to vote.

The term of DVS, if elected, will be only till 2014, as Shankarappa had resigned from his seat before his term came to an end.
