Mangalore, Nov 29:
"Media should reveal facts within the purview of law of the land without resorting to bias by highlighting one side of the story."

"Those who assault a doctor on duty or the hospital staff commit non-bailable offence."

These were some of the points displayed on placards which were carried out in the massive peaceful protest march by medicos in the city, from Light House to DC’s office on Tuesday November 29, condemning the recent attacks on doctors, paramedical personnel and hospital.

Later, addressing the protestors, senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Shantharam Shetty said that a doctor's aim is to cure the disease of the patients and no doctor would like to see his patient dying. "But in some extreme cases, even doctors will not be able to save their patients due to factors beyond their control. Birth and death are natural occurrences. In such cases relatives of the patients should try to understand the situation," he said.

He further said, "Today’s peaceful march is not for displaying the strength of the doctors' community, but to tell the facts to the society - about the conditions under which doctors are forced to perform their duty. Mangalore has gained good name in the field of medicine and that should be retained with co-operation from the public."

Dr Mohandas Bhandary, central council member, Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that Mangalore being the medical hub of the nation has treated thousands of lacs of patients. "Doctors here have the object of developing healthy rapport with patients, but attacks on doctors and nurses and vandalism in hospitals is condemnable."

He also said that before taking extreme steps against the doctors/hospitals, one should contact the consumer forum if one feels injustice has been meted out by doctors. He urged the government to take action and arrest the assaulters and make them pay a penalty of Rs 50,000, apart from sentencing them to three years judicial custody and a fine amount twice the value of hospital property damaged.

The protest was organised by the local chapter of IMA. Doctors and healthcare personnel from various medical colleges, private hospitals and clinics participated with an intention to educate and to create awareness on the issue among public, the administration and the police department. Police sources said that an estimated 2000 protestors were present.

A memorandum addressed to the CM was submitted to the DC. The doctors closed their OPDs, but attended to emergency cases and in-patients.

We should'nt blame Doctors because they are well qualified and experienced with their jobs and they have lot of humanly patience in work. The problem is with hospital management and their staff.Every hospital should keep some inspectors who can check on staff behaviour towards people otherwise same things will repeat.

Dear Doctors, How many times have you given receipts for your fees? next time will my doctor give me the receipt for his fees? i am ready to pay 10% extra for his service.I know doctors who go to Spain and France once a year for fun trips. Is it to spend their black money or really to relive stress?. When a operation is done pay a Receipt :-) For all your hard work and dedication you surely need to be rich But surely with white money not black i think....

    Dear Dr.Kamath,
U R lucky that your clinic is not attacked by Shiva Sainiks.Just for your information that these same Shiva Sena people attacked all our Udipi & Mangalore Retaurants owned by Kamaths,Raos,Kinis & Shettys in Fort Bombay during 1968.With a result we bachelors at that time went to Railway Canteens to eat as hotels were closed for a long time.By attacking our hotels these Shiva Sena came to power first time in Bombay.

I suppose it is normal for the people sometimes to over react and vent their anger, verbal attacks, frustration, disappointment, and ill feelings towards the Doctors, Nurses and Medical faculty, especially when they lose their beloved person or an important member of their family, the pain of which is too much to bear, and this could happen in other fields as well. For instances, every now and then, the Politicians and the Bureaucrats also cope up and bear the public wrath and anger in great measure, when they do not fulfill their election promises and/or live up to their expectations. And so, some understanding and tolerance is required from the victims when such events take place. Of course, the physical attacks should never be condoned and tolerated, and be severely dealt with should they take place.

Of course, like in any profession, there are bound to be some bad Doctors as well, who are mostly vulnerable to such ill treatment by the patients or their relatives, and these Doctors will do well to change their attitude and way of working and strive to live up to the norms and high ethics laid down by the medical profession.

These doctors are under the impression that they can bleed people in the name of curing them. Carrying out unwanted operations, making patients stay in hospitals unnecessarily, unwanted tests etc are some of the things they do to mint money. They take so much from the society but return nothing. They dont even pay proper income tax. Some of them may jump at me for saying this. But how many doctors issue bills for the service they render. In hospitals we have to pay doctors fees in a small slip where there is no entry of any sort for the service done.

We cannot blame the doctors, nurses or any others working in the medical field. These people work very hard and that too many hours beyond the allotted time. I know that some doctors make money as they have their own clinics and they worked very very hard to come to this stage. It is the same with other professions. You know I worked in New York in a hospital for more than 20 years and I have seen that in the beginning thses doctors work for more than 18-20 hours and sometimes 24 hours. Here they have to deal with different kinds of patients and they handle it very well. So my advice to patients, their relatives and doctors to work hand in hand. Doctors did not took the education by spending a huge amount and got that profession to harm the patients in any way. Good Luck and peace.

Yes there are good docs and average docs, but don't compare our health systems with the west. It would be un-affordable for our people if docs go western way there it is taken care by NHS/insurance.Here docs work on an average 12-14 hrs a day, for average earnings, of-course there are a few who make huge (like in any other profession). Lets have nice doctor-patient relation and work towards a healthy society.

Dear Doctors, we request all our General Public not to attack or rough up with duty bound Doctors in any Hospitals. But same time please request your colleague Doctors, Nurses or Sisters to behave humanly when it is most required and not to make big issue when there is small scruples because common people always thinks that Doctors are real Gods and people believe they have every right to show anger with God when there is personal loss or inconvenience

Good steps by the medicos. Relatives of the patient keep quiet when they get admit their patient to the hospital. They never bothered to ask the approximate cost or expenses for the treatment. After treatment if they can't afford to pay, then they just bring the 'gundas' or 'Bajarangis'(self styled social worker) to creat trouble. If the patient dies they blame the Doctors without knowing the 'abc' of the illness or treatment. Let the poor patients go to the 'govt.hospital' Let them be aware of that their own government is running the'govt hospitals' for the poor. Sometimes media seems to hurt the feelings of some people. So the media professionals requires a high level of learning so tht society will get correct information. Nice to see Dr, Shantaram Shetty and Dr. Nagesh Attavar in the protest march

There are greedy doctors who work for money and not for the patients well- being. There are doctors who are just there for fame who deserves slaps, assaults what ever they deserve.
There are doctors only think about the money and not the sick.Doctors need to be strictly regulated by the registration authorities like the western countries in order to work selflessly for the benefit of the sick and not for their own benefit.

congratulations for organising a one day protest. though karnataka govt has already passed the law making attacks on medical personnel,a non bailable offence, it is rarely used by the police while framing charges.vested intersts coming into the picture to gain mileage out of patient deaths is another issue.

Out of the topic, when I just see Dr Shantharam Shetty a thought comes to my mind. There is no second word about how many lives Dr Shantharam Shetty has saved in his carrier., how many hopeless casses he might have fixed, howmany disjoints he may have joined, how many fragments he may have fixed.
Am sure every third person patient who suffered from fractured/dislocated/accident etc in and around DK/Udupi in current or last generation must have atleast one screw or Nut fixed in their body and this was done none other than this Great asset of Mangalore. Hatts off to you DR.

There are good doctors as there are good politicians!
The profession will be well served if they form a self regulatory body with medical as well as other professionals such as NGO reps, legal reps etc and investigate negligence cases.
Also all practicing doctors should be certified time to time so that the abreast with newer developments in the medical profession.
