Udupi, Aug 27: Large heaps of waste that washed ashore during the monsoon continue to remain uncleared along Malpe beach, drawing sharp criticism from visitors and residents who say the litter is spoiling the scenic coastline.
Plastic waste, bottles, diapers, footwear, discarded toys and food wrappers are strewn across nearly two kilometres of the beach. Locals allege that since the responsibility for beach maintenance shifted from the Beach Development Committee to the tourism department last year, no clearance work has been undertaken this monsoon. Earlier, waste used to be cleared at least two to three times during the rainy season.

The garbage heaps have created a stench, with reports that dead fish are getting mixed with the debris brought in by the tides. Tourists arriving in large numbers during weekends have expressed disappointment over the unhygienic conditions.
The waste has also raised concerns ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi immersions, as idols from Malpe, Thottam, Kodiayali, Moodubettu, Kodavoor, Pandubettu, Kalmady and several local bhajan mandirs are traditionally immersed at the main beach. Residents say the accumulated waste could obstruct the immersion process and have urged the department to act immediately.
Locals stressed that with festivals approaching and tourist footfall increasing, the authorities must clear the waste without delay.
