Sullia: Dispute on ‘Made Snana’ Turns Ugly, Protester Beaten Up

Sullia, Nov 30:
K S Shivaramu, president of Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum was allegedly beaten up by a crowd for protesting against ‘Made Made Snana’ a traditional ritual at the Kukke Subramanya Temple.

On Tuesday November 29, members of the Forum came to the temple condemning the ritual and demanded to stop the traditional Made Snana. An appeal was sent to Puttur assistant commissioner and to temple administrator Sundar Bhat to ban the practice of rolling over the plantain leaves at the temple.

Thereafter, talking to media persons, Shivaramu questioned the practice of serving food in different rows based on community. "About this we will make a report and produce before the Supreme Court. We have taken the permission of Sundar Bhat," they claimed.

At this juncture, the mob is said to have attacked the president of the Forum in front of the police and chased him. Though there were enough policemen to stop them, they did nothing, it is alleged.

Made made snana has been performed at the temple premises for three days during the annual Champa Shasthi festival for many years. The ritual continued on the third day here despite controversy.

A case has been registered in Subramanya police station.

I see so many comments in this forum against brahmins, upper caste people, castiesm etc.,when they refer the issue of made madesnan in Sri Kukke temple.
It should be clearly understood that in every religion there is beliefs on so many aspects.accordingly customs are being observed. This is not confined to Hinduism only.Made snan isuue is a local issue related to Sri Kukke temple prevelent since centuries going on peacefully hitherto without any charges and voluntarily. Then why this hull gulla now?Let the issue be discussed in public forum locally and a decesion taken locally after through discussion and concenses. Why outside people should poke their noses into the issue. Is it because only bashing against Hinduism conform a rational/modern/forward approach?Where were these forcess when diffierent parties were ruling the state?People who are giving big lectures against brahmanism/castiesim should question for themselves why in most of non brahmin marriages/auspicious occsions brahmnins are called for to perform poojas? Why in Kudroli Gokarnath Temple.Mangalore for dispensing theertha & prasad to VIP visitors outsider brahmin is being called to perform the act?Are there shortage of 'shanthis'in the temple? There are so many questions pondering like this.So people, don't jump to conclusion on made snan matter according ones thinking.Let it be solved locally. That is the best solution.

Dear Nisha, When you say Brahmin's also do MADE SNANA pl know that they will never perform that ritual on foods eaten by Non-Brahmins.. I ask all the people who are supporting this ritual, what is their opinion on the practice of serving the food to different castes separately... Pl remember that Mr.SHIVARAM was protesting against this practice also.. The days of these casteist rituals are over.. If the priestly caste can not read these signals then we have to feel sorry for them...

It is true that there is no force on anyone to do madesnaana but people from civil society should not allow such a practice by fellow citizens because most of them are ignorant and are brainwashed into such ritual by the priestly class. It would be foolish to believe that priestly class would ever decide to disband such a practice because they would end up as loosers in the game of perpetual subjugation of lower castes. It is about self respect of human beings.I bet any doctor from upper castes would support any bizarre unscientific ritual done by lower castes by saying that such ritual has psycho therapeutic value and would reduce such belief as blind beliefs. Most absurd is the fact that rollover is done only on Brahmin left overs.

before passing judgement, All I said was If a soul gets respite by following this ritual (which does not harm others in any way), let him do it. WHO in its definition of health has included Spiritual Health...If one individual resorts to anti depressants for tiding over a personal crisis, a believer might achieve better results by praying/ carrying acts of faith...And believer can be from any caste...issue of caste has been mixed with this by atheists! Why should these non believers ever worry about the acts of believers?
Remember: Ambrose Pare, father of modern orthopaedics once said: "I bandaged him and God healed him". Unless one has a faith in anything he does, life has no meaning...

Well said Dr Kiran Acharya. There are many practices in various religions which one may not agree with. That does not mean, one has to go and create a stink whenever that particular ritual takes place.I am sure Dr Kran Acharya has never taken part in this ritual and will probably never take part. Fact:People of all castes undertake this ritual and some even claim benefit. Will these people who go around temples decrying rituals stop the christian faith healers who claim to cure people by mass prayers? If you don agree with it,don't do it.There is no need to create friction unecessarily. If you feel it is illegal,go to the courts. Why target only hindu temples?

Next day He got nice response from the public for his non veg restaurant. With due respect to all dalits I kindly request you guys not to accept this type of jokers as your leaders. Kill that person who acts against our beliefs. riyaz, udupi/dubai I dont know why you are Jumping to Conclusions whithout any full knowledge about the Made Snana .In My Village Kadandale there is shri subramanya temple there even Brahmins do MadesnanNot necessarily Non Brahmins .I am an Hindu and I commented by Views about Hindu ritual .I think you are a Nonhindu and it is not fair to comment on a Hindu religious belief.I have always maintained if this needs to be banned Only Religious Heads like Swamijis can take a stand and order people will obey .But not by doing Hulla Gulla ,Vandalism etc .I have travelled to many Countries abroad and seen the relious faiths of many religions and I have found there is spiritual meaning attached to many of the Hindu Religious practises if practised with understanding the meaning of the same can have good transformation and at the same time if done without understanding done will have no effect .It will be like fish bathing in Ganga or Crow sitting on the University thinking that it has gained Knowledge .At the same time all Religions are same equally Good and effective in Human Transformations they needs to be practised with Understanding

in Goa Konkani there is a Kahavat .Gharache Gut Sangunaka Chowganche Uttar Modunaka. When the whole bunch of Devotees of Shri Subramanya Temple want this Made Snana why this Shivaramu went there to protest ? for the information of Jaimini,Manipal both Sri Rajaram Mohan Roy,Dayanand Saraswati were firm Believers of God they opposed Sati Sysytem and Bal Vivaha beacuse they were Blind Beliefs without any spiritual essence .Where as in Arya Samajs even now they follow all ritualistic practises .In Mumbai Arya Vidya mandirs are very popular where in they teach a little of spiritual ideals as well .

Made Snana is not a blind belief there is some spiritual essence in it any way it is not compulsory for anybody .But in case it needs to be stopped there is a method that is through Religious heads like Swamijis who can change it if the need arises not by going to the spot any making hulla gulla

Swamijis should give their opinion in this type of cases. But they are interested more in politics, instead of religious matters. Few days before on Suverna news in Julie Laxmi's "nana Neena" program, one Hindu particepent told all BJP politicians have deposited their black money in temples, that's the safest place now like Swiss banks n they are paying interest to swamigis for protecting their black money. That's the reason all swamigis are he'll bend to protect the current BJP govt. I felt there is truth in his comments which he expressed so boldly in front of TV camera.

Many people believe the wrong version of media report. This tradition is not only for dalits. Even Brahmins perform made snana. And there is no force to do it on a single person. I don't know whether it is good practice or not(it is a different question). Every religion has this kind of practices(if not the same). If people(so called samaja sevakas) try to gain the popularity by protesting or going to media, this kind of situation is expected.

The practice of Dalits follow the deeply humiliating tradition called 'Madhe Snana' and roll over banana leaves on which the Brahmins have eaten their food is a disgrace to the civil society and the government should stop this sub-human practice. Pejavar Swamiji should take the initiative to stop this unscientific and humiliating sub-human practice of forced tradition on the Dalits alone. The temple should also stop the practice of differentiating between different communities while serving food which is again is the old practice of degrading the lower caste Hindus.
There is absolutely no element of birth-based discrimination or denial of opportunity for any human being in Vedic way of life. Wake-up people, we are in the 21st Century India.

Any more everything is big issue. Media loves the circus to entertain the readers.
Now there is a question to be asked to Rama Sene members. It is wrong for young men and young women to dance and have friendly togetherness inside Pubs,Parks or on beaches. It is a God given right to be attractive to opposite sex. But it is alright in the name of faith for Half Naked Men to roll with women on the floor. Many men were wearing lungis and rolling while women were rolling dressed in sarees.
Atleast in pubs the young people were standing, bumping and dancing but in this case people of both sex are rolling together bumping each other on the floor. What a hypocracy on part of Rama Sena members.

Dr. Prabhakar Bhat, the speaker in the recently held protest against communal violence bill was showing his hatredness towards minorities. Why he does not set his own home right ? Has he voiced any objection to the discrimination meted out to his own people by the section of his society. What answer has he got to this question ?

What Shivaramu did was appreciable,in this era people should stop those beleif's which was set by some people for keeping the people suppressed for ages. Also the practice of serving the food in different rows based on community should be stopped, this has to be banned by the supreme court & so called educated people who always defend the caste based differences being shown in the temple's & religious places of hindus must come forward to abolish them voluteerly,no point in raising voices about conversion by other religions, unless we raise to the occassion & bring all the hindu brothers & systers together!!!!

Every citizen has their own freedom to perform their religion according to their belief and tradition. Who he is to stop People performing their religious belief? I doubt ethics of this Person. Too much advice is injurious to health. That is why Shivaramu was beaten up. The devotees are not harming anyone or themselves. It is up to them. No one can force them to stop.

These kind of rituals can only be stopped by educating people. Imposing sudden ban on it effects people's sentiments.

I saw the incident in SUVARNA TV, he was chased like a dog and beaten by a large group of people. Looks like devotees were seriously hurt by his statements.
