Bangalore: Portraits of Four Stalwarts to be Unveiled in Legislative Council

Bangalore, Nov 30: Portraits of four prominent Indian leaders – Sir M Visvesvaraya, Lal Bhadur Shastry, Swami Vivekananda, and Subhash Chandra Bose – will be unveiled in the Karnataka Legislative Council of the State Secretariat on December 5.

Addressing reporters on Wednesday, Legislative Council Chairman D H Shankaramurthy said all four personalities contributed to the nation building in different ways and a decision has been taken to install their portraits on the walls of the Legislative Council hall.

The State Legislative Council hall presently has just the portrait of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

The country is observing 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and his speech at the Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 would be played during the programme on December 5, Shankaramurthy said

Similarly, speeches of former prime minster Lal Bhadur Shastry, famous engineer and Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya, and freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose would also be played during the programme.

Portraits of all these personalities had not been installed even in the State Assembly hall, the chairman said.

All legislators, former Chief Ministers, current and former speakers of the Assembly, and other prominent personalities would be invited to the programme being held on Monday at 9.30 am, he said.

The 116th session of the Legislative Council would commence from December 5 and conclude on December 16.

Shankaramurthy said the Council would also pass resolutions congratulating Kannada writers Dr Chandrashekar Kambar and S L Bhyrappa for winning Jnanpith and Saraswati Samman awards respectively.

The Council secretariat has received 453 questions and 32 calling attention motions.

In the 75-member Upper House, the BJP has 39 members, Congress – 18, Janata Dal(S) – 14, Independent – two and chairman – 1 and vacant – 1.
