Archbishop Thanks CM, Asks to Appoint 'Interested' Christians to CMDC

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 5: Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras, who returned from Rome on Sunday after attending a conference in Vatican, has thanked the Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda for the State Government’s decision of withdrawing all the cases clamped against the innocent Christian youth in connection with the attacks against Churches in 2008 in different parts of Karnataka, including Mangalore.

''Though it is late, the Government has done justice to the innocent victims of the attacks on the churches and the worshippers after the harrowing treatment,” the Archbishop said in a press release issued on Monday.

The Archbishop, who is also the President of Karnataka Region Catholic Bishops’ Council (KRCBC) and the Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights (KUCFHR), has expressed his thanks to all the Bishops, priests, religious and all people and organizations who had worked incessantly for the withdrawal of the cases and said ''Our collective effort finally has yielded result.”

Referring to the media reports regarding the State Government’s decision regarding appointment of the members of the Christian Minority Development Council (CMDC), the Archbishop has urged the Chief Minister to reconsider the appointment of members and include the names suggested by the Christian Community.

''The CMDC is established in the interest of the Christian community and the members who are interested with the community need to be there in the decision making process,” the Archbishop said pointing out that the Christian community felt ''let down” that its leaders were ''simply sidelined by this decision of the Government. We urge the Government to re-consider this decision of appointing members and include the names suggested by the Christian Community.”

Archbishop Moras pointed out that the Minority Affairs Minister Dr Mumtaz Ali Khan had personally requested him to furnish names of leaders from the community for appointment as members to the CMDC. The Chief Minister had also reiterated the demand and accordingly names of Christian community leaders were sent to the Government. But the Government had not considered any of the names and packed the CMDC with its own nominees, he said.

The Archbishop reiterated the demands of the entire Church in Karnataka for rejection of the Justice B K Somashekara Commission’s report, payment of adequate compensation to all the victims and churches or places of worship, even though monetary compensation cannot meet the ends of justice and entrust the investigation of the church attacks of 2008 to a central investigating agency like the CBI to bring out the truth and punish the culprits to instill confidence among the minority community about the Government’s ''sincerity, impartiality and secular credentials.”|

The Chairmanship of the Minority Commission must be rotated among all minority communities and the Christian community must be given adequate representation in all the boards and corporations based in accordance with their population, the Archbishop demanded.

I have gone through various comments, though limited and happy to know that many are talking about IFKCA members and Mr. Ronald Colaco for their genuine result oriented efforts. My cousin from my father’s sister has been another unfortunate one to suffer for 3 years, I was very happy to see in Daijiworld that Ronald Colaco taking the right delegation of Mangalore BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, BJP spokes person Dhananjay Kumar and CM’s advisor Devakar along with Felix D’souza and other prominent members of the community which really prompted the then Home Minister and the Chief Minister boldly to take decisions to withdraw the cases. However, I was informed that the Govt. had to wait until the completion of the term given to the Somshekar Commission in order not to violate the statutory rights of the commission. This is the first major step indeed. The second step in the right direction is to follow up the procedural work. I have read someone already narrating in one of the comments here the actual steps followed by IFKCA members to complete the task of withdrawal of cases right from the grass root level. This is the real and correct approach that has yielded results. Any delegation going to the governor, Chief Minister, Home Minister and publishing the same will not bring result. Indeed we all are thankful to our CM, HM and the other Cabinet ministers. Special thanks to Mr. Ronald Colaco and IFKCA members for their continues concerted effort.

The views expressed by Philip.R. Rodrigues Managlore, Anil D Souza Mangalore/Kuwait and Harold Menezes Mangalore/Saudi are looks quite realistic. I have high regards to Christain community and their intstitutes, studeied at Roas Mystica convent High School, St. Aloysius college.
They are peace loving community. I studied moral science in my early school times and teaching of christ insist for forgiveness. Herold comment says the same and also his views are correct any Government/ Ruling party will never harbour such acts to defame their own government and party. If Mahendra Kumar sacked by RSS the so called JDS welcomed him in their political party, JDS always advocate that they are the only secular party in this state and blame BJP and congress are creating communal dishharmony to creat their vote bank how true it is? Congress always blame BJP for communal view and apease minority than in Karnataka they ruled for so many years why they are not formed any board to uplift christian community? I strongly suspect the unknown hands behind church attack conspirency to defame the newly elected first BJP Government. It is clear by the act of opposition party who tried to topple BJP government for the last three years. I also blame (BJP)Yeddi government for corrouption. All previous governments of JDS and Congress are also corroupt but they were experts to cover up. I fully agree with Philip that religious leaders should be kept far away from politics be it Hindu,Muslim & Christian

I see our Bangalore Arch Bishop is thanking all the Bishops, priest, religious people and organisations stating that it are "Our collective effort "? I acknowledge bishop and persist prayers since it is their committed mission to pray for others in difficulty since most of the bishops and priests are enjoying all comforts that are not available to a large number of unfortunate brothen of our society. Various advocates have worked to argue on the cases in the court on behalf of our youth victims, whether payed or not. Many thanks to them. Number of individuals and organisations must have been involved during the initial days of Church attacks and thanks to them also. I have read in daijiworld that, on 2 occasions, bishops and Arch Bishop meeting the present chief minister and the home minister requesting them to withdraw the cases. When the fact is that we had read either in the earlier news that the former CM had already agreed to withdraw the cases following the approach of IFKCA Chairman and other important members of our community where the process of withdrawal of cases had already began by then. Then what was the need for such kind of representation from Bishops and Arch Bishops and claim the credit now.

Dear Bishop, if you are so confident about the quality and social acceptability of the persons you suggested for CDB, you should have disclosed those names to the Christian Community much prior of submitting the same to the CM. At least now, I request you to make that list of great leaders you recommended public through media or press note. And if you dont do that, surely we can get it through RTI. What is wrong with Gladis Shirva , Kennedy Bangalore, Franklyn Mangalore and others who are already made members in CDB?

While I thank all those involved in withdrawing the case, I must thank FKCA and Ronald Colaco for thier support to my brother and all those who were trapped with false cases on church attack issue. I still remember Sep 14, 2008 when my brother was arrested by Kadri Police, when police were trying to shift all arrested youth to Bellary Jail, it was Colaco who paid Lawyer fees for every one (I am sure it's a big amount, in lacs). When no one there to support us, he came like good Samaritan, though he was not in India, he arranged everything from aborad, and l also heard that, he was able to convince the police personnel not to transfer innocent youth to Bellary jail.

All I would say is, may God bless him richly, may he continue to work for downtrodden and needy. We need many more Ronald Colaco sirs in our community. Once again thank you every one ..

Finally cases has been withdrawn for not providing justice to those who suffered for no reasons. Govt and its leaders has no integrity and moral values for themselve so how one can expect any justice from these people. Decision makers are biggest crooks and hand in gloves with these attackers which is shame on these attackers. By now they may going under mental stress of attacking our churches and more god's punishment will come their future generations. Very sad incidence one can't forget but forgive such people. God Bless to those who work hard to follow on these cases to withdraw which is again a false cases done by policemen with the support of ruling parties.

Indeed Archbishop Bernard Moras has done a great job for the unfortunate people who were locked up in jail for no fault of theirs. Our church dignitary had indeed played a very important role in this episode and had repeatedly taken up this matter with Authorities at different times and the entire Christian community is ever grateful to Archbishop Moras for his concerted efforts to look after his flock. This role of his has instilled Christians in general with hope and courage.

Kudos to you Archbishop Bernard and may The Good Lord grant you health and longevity to guide and protect your people.

I am true follower of Christ and his preaching – Forgive those who have trespassed against us. Some miscreants from Bajaran Dal at the behest of Mahindra Kumar attacked our churches . RSS Chief sacked him promptly for his misdeeds. Moreover, no Govt. head will ever sponsor such kind of heinous act as it would bring disgrace to his own Govt., both country and worldwide. Yet we found the Chief Minister going to our Arch Bishop to apologise for the unfortunate incident. But, what our Arch Bishop, Supposedly the true follower of Christ, did? He did not offer any seat nor show the minimum courtesy to the top most administrator of our state! Rather our Arch Bishop yield at him soon after he entered and which attracted the world wild condemnation of this inhuman act of our beloved Arch Bishop. Is this a good example set by our religious leader for all of us?

It is good to know our Arch Bishop has thanked everyone apart from the present CM on the withdrawal of cases. What People want to know about is, Who and which organisation had worked consistently from the time of church attack till the withdrawal of cases ? Who did the through follow up of moving files right from the individual police stations to the Police commissioner to IGP to ADGP to DGP to Home Secretary to Law department to Home ministry and finally to the cabinet to approve the withdrawal ? I refer earlier news from Daijiworld in this regard. I have read in the past the Mangalore Bishop and the Arch Bishop had no clue of the exact victims of our youth facing criminal cases following the church attack since they were talking in the press about only 150 victims. Whereas as per earlier Daijiworld news that it is IFKCA submitted to the Govt. with the exact list of 338 victims of criminal cases booked against our youth from various police stations. So, My special thanks and prayers for IFKCA Chairman and their members first and then to all individuals and organisations, Bishops and Arch Bishop for their kind concern.

During one of my vacation trip to Mangalore in February 2011, I remember reading in the newspaper about Arch Bishop’s comments about Govt.’s allocation of Rs 50 Cores for Christian development schemes has “ A Political Ploy” and as such, he did not want such amount for appeasement of Christian community ! ?
What moral right does our Arch Bishop as now to approach the same government asking them to appoint people of his choice to CMDC ?
I think we need to flow one standard, especially when it comes from our religious leaders like the Arch Bishop.

Arch Bishop thanking CM is a good move. But dear CM, please note that Archbishop is representing only religious aspects of Christians and his interference in Christian Development Board formation is completely wrong. Vatican church strictly prohibits the priests from becoming political representatives and they cant even contest elections. In such scenario how can they suggest few favorable names for Christian Development Board? If Bishops have identified such great social workers among Christians, they may surely be made as the directors of so many Christian NGOs, Hospitals, Medical and Engineering Colleges. Religious leaders are just like and equal to any other ordinary tax payers of this state and their list need not be considered for implementation. Tomorrow such religious leaders will tell that they are going to decide the who should be the ministers, MLA candidates and MP candidates....and poor Christians have to please the religious leaders by all means to get their recommendation letter? Dear CM, please dont allow religious leaders to interfere in democratic way of social functioning.
