Mangalore, Dec 5: The families of those who perished in the 2010 air crash in Mangalore led by Air India Crash Victims Families Association met Air India Express COO S Chandrakumar at Lal Bagh here on Monday December 5 to discuss the issue of compensation.

As many as 25 families were present. They complained to Chandrakumar that Air India had not compensated the families as per its promises. Some of the families had got very little amount, they said.

They also complained that Air India was biased in giving out compensation. "While some families have received compensation in crores, other have got in lacs. There are cases where the entire amount has not been given yet. Those who were promised Rs 40 lac got only Rs 20 lac," they said.

"Families of victims who were aged have been given little, while those of young victims have been given more," they lamented.

Chandrakumar said that R P Shahi, the former joint director general of civil aviation, had been appointed as an observer to help out the families with the issue of compensation. He asked the families to approach Shahi with any complaints.

He further said that 70 families have been compensated so far, with Rs 60 crore being distributed among families of 77 victims.

He also assured that a meeting would be convened on Monday December 12 to discuss the issue in detail. He asked the families to get a list of their complaints to the meeting so that a solution could be sought. He also added that Mulla & Mulla, the legal firm representing Air India and R P Shahi too would be present.

AIR INDIA how come it has taken such a long time for the Air Crash Compensation. Please give a right explanation to the family members of the victims. You AIR INDIA officials are wasting their time and money over this issue where many lost their lives and their livelihood which was very precious for them.

This is a classic example of sadness on one part and arrogance on the other part. This National carrier which is seeking tax payers money on one hand to stay afloat denies the rightful same to those who have lost thier near and dear earning members of the family.
