Moodbidri: Woman Files Dowry Harassment Complaint Against Husband, In-laws

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Dec 8: Ramavati (30), wife of Anoop from here, has filed a complaint in the local police station against her husband. She has alleged that her husband and his family members have been torturing her physically and mentally, in pursuit of their greed for more dowry in the form of gold ornaments and cash.

Anoop, son of the late Devappa Kotian from Bannadka here, is an artist by profession. Ramavati, a native of Dugganbettu near Kukkundoor in the taluk, has named her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and the wife of her husband’s elder brother, of pestering her continuously, to bring more dowry.

She says that during the engagement function conducted in June last, the groom’s family had placed a demand for 25 sovereigns of gold ornaments and four lac rupees in cash. Ramavati’s family could, after some parleys, scaled down the demand to Rs 2.5 lac in cash and 12 sovereigns of gold ornaments. The marriage was conducted on July 10, 2011 at Kesaragadde Hall, during which the entire cash and gold as agreed were handed over to the groom’s family, Ramavati claims.

She has stated that her husband and his family members had begun pressurizing her to bring in additional gold ornaments and cash from her parents, within three days of her marriage. She says that Anoop, with help from his mother, Tulasi, sister, Anita, brother-in-law, Anil, and sister-in-law, Shobha, had tried to sprinkle kerosene on her on Monday to set her ablaze. She says that these persons even threatened her with death in case of her failure to bring additional dowry as demanded by them.

Great job done by the lady. Better be strong and fight for it than ending life. I wonder still these type of people exist in the world asking for Dowry and harassing girls. Concerned authorities should take swift action against them if proven guilty. Let others learn what Ms. Ramavathi did and follow the same.
