KDA unveils own translation engine for accurate Kannada translations, app launch soon

Bengaluru, Nov 4: The Kannada Development Authority (KDA) has unveiled its own translation engine aimed at enhancing the accuracy of Kannada translations. This initiative comes amid the increasing demand for effective translation solutions, despite the presence of various artificial intelligence-driven applications.

The KDA's engine will utilise vocabulary from over 80 Kannada dictionaries, promising to provide more precise translations compared to existing software. Currently in development, it is expected to launch alongside a mobile application in January.

While popular tools like Google Translate are frequently used for Kannada-English translations, they often struggle with accuracy. KDA president Purushottam Bilimele highlighted that the unique vowel endings in Kannada words can lead to discrepancies in translation, setting KDA's engine apart.

“We have designed a system that ensures accuracy by considering the distinct features of Kannada,” he stated, noting the upload of 150,000 words from various dictionaries.

The KDA aims to complete the initial phase of the project in the coming months, with plans to expand to Kannada-Hindi translations afterward. This effort seeks to address the common inaccuracies found in translations, particularly on public signage, and promote a higher standard of linguistic precision in the state.
