Udupi, Nov 10: Adarsha Charitable Trust (R) organised a massive diabetes awareness rally at Udupi district Hospital on Sunday, November 10.
The event was held in collaboration with Adarsha Group of Institutions, Udupi, Adarsha Hospital, Udupi District Family and Health Welfare Commission, Udupi District Hospital, District Survey Committee, Indian Medical Association Udupi Karavali, A P I Udupi Manipal and Lions Club 317C.
The formal programme commenced at the Udupi District Hospital premises and was inaugurated by former MP K Jayaprakash Hegde, who lit the ceremonial lamp and released balloons to mark the beginning of the rally.
Jayaprakash Hegde, former MP of Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, in his inaugural note remarked, “While we may avoid sweets, jaggery and sugar are used in nearly every dish during functions, which is why awareness should target those preparing the food. Flavour enhancers in food also raise sugar levels, and government intervention is necessary for effective control. Unfortunately, those who most need this information often don’t attend such events. Women tend to follow stricter diets, while men eat indiscriminately. Today’s dietary habits are contributing to rising cases of cancer, diabetes, and leading to kidney and organ failure.”
Prasanna Kumar, senior endocrinologist and Associated Centre for Diabetes and Endocrine Centre and CEO of Bengaluru Diabetes Hospital, addressing the gathering said, “The focus should be on preventing diabetes rather than just treating existing cases. A balanced diet and regular exercise are essential. This year’s World Diabetes Day theme, ‘break the barrier and bridge the gap,’ highlights the importance of accessible, accurate information especially as social media often spreads misinformation. It’s crucial to trust doctors’ advice. For children with diabetes, insulin may not always be effective, but with proper management, students diagnosed with diabetes can lead successful lives and live up to 80 years.”
Dr G S Chandrashekar, medical director of Adarsha Hospital, welcomed the gathering, stating, “The effectiveness of any treatment depends on the patient’s response, which stems from awareness. India ranks second globally in diabetes cases, and one person dies from diabetes-related complications every five seconds on this earth.
Education is essential to tackle the issues diabetes causes. While it may not be possible to eliminate diabetes completely, we can work to gradually reduce its impact. Our initial goal was to bring together 2,000 students, but despite some challenges, we’re pleased to have over 1,000 participants here today.”
The rally started from the Udupi District Hospital and proceeded through Jodu Katte and KM Road before concluding at Adarsha Hospital. Participants showcased informative tableaus on diabetes and performed Zumba exercises to encourage physical activity.
The rally saw participation from students of MGM Degree College, Poorna Prajna College, Milagres College, Netra Jyothi and other various nursing institutions.
Udupi district surgeon Dr H Ashok, Dr Suresh, District chairperson Lions club 317C Ashok Kumar Y G, District surveillance officer Dr Nagarathna, Dr Vasudeva, Taluk health officer Dr Vasudeva Upadyaya, District surgeon Dr Ashok R, Rama ram, Dr Ananth Shenoy, Lions Club Dr Ashok Kumar Okude, District governor Lions club 317C MJF Mohammad Anif, CEO Adarsh Hospital Vimala Chandrashekar and others were present on the occasion.
