Mangalore, Dec 13: The special session of the council of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) held on Monday December 12 decided to recommend to the government to drop some of the measures proposed in the re-revised Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) brought into effect in the city, and ammend certain rules. The session was presided over by city mayor, Pravin.

The decision was unanimous, with corporators from all the parties joining hands. There has been a consensus on the assessment that the revised CDP is detrimental to the interests of poor and middle class people apart from small scale builders. The recommendations made now are aimed at making concessions to enable poor and common people to live in the city and have their own houses on sites that are smaller than those proposed.

Recommendations

- Bringing down the condition to provide for road building in case of multi-storied complexes, from six metres to four-and-a-half metres.

- Dropping of provision which provides for forceful acquisition of smaller private lands located adjacent to the land during execution of integrated township projects at government rates.

- Modification of a notification through which commercial and residential sites have been grouped under green belt. The government has been requested to dispose off applications seeking to convert these sites back into residential and commercial sites, within 30 days.

The corporators strongly felt that there is a need to make the first of the ammendments, as most of the roads in the city are less than the prescribed width.

Lancelot Pinto, leader of the opposition, who placed his view on the need to revise some of the provisions of the revised CDP, received support from other corporators like Shashidhar Hegde, Navin D’Souza, Ashok, Sudhir Shetty, Shanta, James, Premnath and independent corporator, Mariamma Thomas.

Ruling party corporators expressed their resentment, when opposition corporator S Appi accused the ruling party of enforcing a CDP that is against the interests of the people of the city, in connivance with the lobby of builders. The meeting was adjourned for half an hour after this outburst.

Former mayor and BJP corporator, Shankar Bhat, was the only person in the meeting to have struck to the opinion that the revised CDP is suitable and affective.

Corporation commissioner Dr Harish Kumar was present.

The present form of the CDP does not allow for multi dwelling units (flats) on a property with a road width of less than 6 m, but allows for building independent houses. The simple reason being the narrow road will not sustain the heavy traffic arising out of many flats coming up nor will it allow a fire engine to pass through.

What the corporators are asking for now is ridiculous. If implemented, then it will take us back to the bad old days when flats were being built on every narrow street of Mangalore.

If we wish to have a decongested Mangalore, with more open space, and better traffic, then citizens should strongly oppose this new proposal.

This is again builder's maphia!Homeless poor people of Mangalore are not helped in anyway by this revision. These builders are compelling poor people to buy flats built by them. If the present criteria of 20 feet road is relaxed ,many poor people can construct houses in the their own land which they have bought before these rules were enfoced.Corporators , please do help the poor who have voted for you.not the builders who bribe you.

All these corporator's who reccomended this bill are either born stupid or they are in colabration with the builder's lobby. What has the middle class man and the poor man has got to do with this. All that has happened here is the road have been widened here from 20 feet to 15 feet what the worst thing that can happen. The middle class men will be run over their bike or scooter by a Rich man's car and the same Rich people run over a pedestrian (poor man) ast ther is no space to walk, what's the big deal we have enough people in India to share this responsibility. I had heard a joke ,a lad makes fun of a smaller boy by telling his friend's, I will show you how stupid is this boy, and takes two coins one 10 paisa one a big coin and a 25 paisa coin which is much smaller, and askes the boy one. The boy selecet's the ten paisa coin. The Lad and all his friend's laugh and go. As this happened in front of a shop the shop keeper asks the boy, whether he does not know that 25 paisa is having a higher value. The boy say's he does know, but I alway's think about the future. What future you idiot the shop keeper asks. Do you think, if I pick the 25 paisa coin will he ask me to pick a coin again in front of his friends, 10 paisa is what's needed to keep the game going. I think that is why these corporator's are trying to do. Keep it up Donkey's

Dear MCC corporators,do what ever you want to convince the different lobbies that are helping you to survive in Mangalore but please concrete the Jyoti- bunts hostel stretch road . You brought Advani through Balmatta Jyoti route from the airport to avoid him see the road condition but the poor public cannot do this in a day to day life. The bus operators and auto rickshaw spend extra money on repairs only because of your bad roads. Please do not comment on the state and central government here.. It is MCC and it is the MCC ‘s duty to maintain Mangalore roads and MCC has sufficient funds to do this.

Utter Foolishness... This is an attempt to get profit for Developers. and not to help the public. High rise building must have atleast 30-50 feet setback not 15-20 feet. Most of the builders are against this new CDP. where as the public not against it.. Developers want to loot the public by making it difficult for the public to build independence house there by forcing them to go for Flats.
