Karkala, Dec 19: Prakash Poojary (28) from Nandalike in Belman in the taluk, lost his life after the motor bike he was riding plunged into a pit dug out across the road by contractors executing a project to build a drainage across the road. The accident occurred at around 12.15 am at Nandalike Golikatte Koppala on Sunday December 18.
The contractor, entrusted with the work of asphalting the road leading to Nandalike from Balman, has dug up the road with the intention of erecting minor bridge over the drain. Although he had provided for the vehicles to take a deviation, no warning signals had been set up at this steep bend, where visibility is very poor.
On Sunday morning, the motor bike as well as the body of Poojary were seen lying upside down in the pit. The people, who were unable to see the face of Poojary from above, had thought the victim to be a stranger from some other village. The policemen, who arrived at around 8.30 am, identified the body. At the same spot, Dinesh (25) from Nelligudde had met with a similar accident, suffered injuries in an accident on Saturday night, and he was admitted into a private hospital in the town.
A complaint stands filed in the rural police station here against the contractor. Investigation has been taken up.
