Mangalore: Two Houses in City Burgled, Loss Put at Rs 5.5 lac

Mangalore, Dec 22: Owners of two houses in Dwarakanagar in Kottara here lost gold ornaments and other valuables totally worth around Rs 5.5 lac, after thieves gained entry into their houses and took away precious items on Tuesday December 20 night.

16.5 sovereigns of gold ornaments worth Rs 3.5 lac was found to have been stolen from the house of P Ranganath Aithal. Aithal had locked his house on Tuesday night and visited his parents living in Ashoknagar here, as they were unwell. The neighbours, who saw that the front door of Aithal’s house was ajar on Wednesday morning, called  him over phone. Aithal, who rushed back, found that the front door’s lock had been broken, and the thieves had used the key found in the bedroom to open the steel cupboard to gain access to the ornaments kept there.

Mahendra Shet from Manipal, neigbour of Aithal, said that his in-laws have lost silver patters, pitchers, two pedestal lamps etc totally worth two lac rupees. Shet said his in-laws, to whom this house belongs, were on a visit to Damam since the last 20 days.

Although the above two houses are located in a thickly populated residential area, none of the neighbours got alerted during the theft. Cases have been registered in Urwa police station here in both the above cases. The policemen said that thefts of such nature can be regulated, if the owners, before leaving houses, keep front lights on, and request neighbours to keep an eye on their houses.
