Mangalore, Dec 29: A two-day workshop on 'Teacher Competency Development' organized for college teachers was inaugurated at S K Bhavan, University College, Hampanakatta here on Thursday December 29.
 
Mangalore University vice-chancellor Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy inaugurated the workshop. Addressing the gathering he said that there are good teaching opportunities for job aspirants and deserving candidates in the field of higher education.

"As per UGC statistics, 50 percent of assistant professors' posts, 49 percent of associate professors' posts and 43 percent of professors' posts in the state are vacant. This indicates that there is a dearth of eligible candidates for these posts. By 2020, the number of universities mount from 540 to 2000 and the number of colleges will increase from 32,000 to 35,000," he pointed out.
 
Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, registrar, Mangalore University was the chief guest. Ananthakrishna, honorary president, Mangala Alumni Association and non-executive chairman, Karnataka Bank presided.
 
Dinesh Kumar Alva, president and Dr A M Khan, general secretary were present. The valedictory will be held on December 30.
