Ahmedabad, Jan 11: India reported another case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Gujarat on Friday, as surveillance measures across the country intensify. Meanwhile, China has stated that it is in close communication with the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding respiratory diseases, including HMPV.
China rejects ‘mysterious virus’ label
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun addressed the global attention on HMPV during a press briefing. “HMPV is not a new virus; it has been circulating among humans for over 60 years. Labeling it as ‘mysterious’ is alarmist and unscientific,” Guo stated.
He emphasized that HMPV infections are generally self-limiting and do not require undue concern.
Common symptoms of HMPV
HMPV infections can be challenging to distinguish from other respiratory illnesses like influenza or flu. Common symptoms include:
• Cough
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Runny nose
• Body aches and headaches
Diagnosis and treatment
Healthcare experts recommend against routine testing for HMPV, as there is no specific treatment available. The infection is typically managed through symptomatic treatment, such as:
• Over-the-counter (OTC) medications
• Inhalers
• Rest and hydration
Preventive measures
The WHO advises adopting simple precautions to reduce the risk of HMPV infection:
• Wearing masks in crowded or public places
• Regular handwashing with soap
• Maintaining a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle
India continues to monitor the situation closely, with public health officials emphasizing the importance of awareness and preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
