Mangalore, Jan 1: Jubilation resounded in the air as the city broke into celebrations aplenty to welcome the New Year with joy on the night of Saturday December 31.

Parties and New Year balls were organised in different parts of the city like Panambur beach, Ladies Club and other pubs, discotheques and restaurants. Each of them had people flocking in large numbers, dancing the night away.

DJs and live musical bands were in great demand, and they regaled the revellers to no end, enticing them to the dance floor with lively, peppy music.

Even Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes joined in the celebrations with wife Blossom. He even entertained the crowd with his talent, inviting huge rounds of applause.

The effigy of the 'old man' was burnt in several corners of the city, signifying the end of the year. The practice has become a custom of sorts.

At the stroke of midnight, the sky was lit in myriad colours and the atmosphere was abuzz with the welcome sound of fireworks that went on non-stop for several minutes, amid shouts of 'Happy New Year'. People greeted each other with hugs and handshakes, and called up their loved ones who were not present at the parties.

Tight police security was deployed across the city to ensure that no untoward incident takes place. But it did not deter the youngsters from taking joyrides, greeting everyone, including the policemen.

People are just burning the effigy, We need to eradicate first foreable child labour, explotation of women, disrespect & disreagrd to elderly people. Just mere slogans for stoping of burning effigy will not help.

Burning Old MAN is a stupid custom for it gives the impression that old age is a proble. If it is a symbol of burning Old habits and customs, then change behavior, then give up copying Westen dress and culture first. We have valuable tradition that does does not require burning but revival.

We take great pride in burning effigies even of PM & CM, even tie slippers. This is how we show respect to those still alive. Why take exception to burning effigy of an unknown old man? Grow up Shyam & Dinesh.

It is better for this old man to quit politics and join some dance club.

He has not done anything good for the society and we can't expect anything good from him..

    Dinesh Poojary, Kundapura/Bengaluru:
I meant 'burning of old man' and not 'burning old man'. If there are old people at your home, would you still say 'he is good for nothing'?. More over, burning effigy of old men during New Year is practiced only in India & nowhere else in the world- neither in the West or anywhere else in the east. Very indecent way of marking the beginning of a new year.
