Mangaluru, Jan 22: The state-level Karuna Taxi Drivers' Association (R) (KTDA) meet was held at Karmabar Garden, Bajpe, marking the association's second anniversary. The event was a blend of felicitations and meaningful interactions, with hundreds of taxi drivers from across Karnataka showcasing their unity and solidarity.
K Raghupati Bhat, honorary president of the Udupi Taximen and Maxicab Association, addressed the gathering and shed light on the current challenges faced by taxi drivers across the state. He expressed concern over the mandatory installation of panic buttons in taxis, which now costs Rs 14,000—nearly double the earlier cost of Rs 7,500. These devices, procured only through government-suggested agencies, have caused dissatisfaction among the drivers. Raghupati assured the gathering that the matter, which is currently in court, is expected to receive a favourable judgment next week. He pledged to continue fighting for the rights of taxi drivers.
Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld, emphasized the importance of health for taxi drivers. "Drivers must dedicate at least one hour a day to their health. With no fixed work hours, neglecting health can result in significant personal and familial loss. Taxi drivers lead an unpredictable lifestyle and must prioritize their well-being before hitting the roads," he said. Walter also highlighted the role of taxi drivers in fostering communal harmony. "Taxi drivers are the true ambassadors of unity. They never ask passengers about their religion; they leave religious differences at home and serve everyone equally," he added.
Najma Farook, the newly appointed CAP for traffic under the Mangaluru police commissionerate, urged taxi drivers to adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents. She assured them of her commitment to discussing their issues with higher authorities and the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
Other dignitaries present included Keshava Acharya (ex-serviceman), Abdul Khadar (airport representative), Lawrence F D’Cunha (Permude), and Deepak Michal Alvares.
Manjunath Gowda, president of the Karuna Taxi Drivers' Association, expressed his gratitude to all the taxi drivers for their support in organizing the event. He encouraged everyone to stay united to tackle future challenges effectively.
