Stany Bantwal takes initiative to create zebra crossing on national highway at Bikarnakatte

Mangaluru, Jan 22: A zebra crossing near the U-turn in front of the Infant Jesus Shrine entrance on the national highway at Bikarnakatte had faded away and remained unattended for several years. Despite bringing the issue to the attention of national highway engineers, their response was dismissive, stating, "There are no people in this area." This carelessness made it extremely difficult for pedestrians to cross the road safely.

Determined to address the issue, a concerned resident and well-known photographer, Stany Bantwal, personally visited the national highway office in Nanthoor to highlight the problem to the authorities. Shockingly, the officials demanded Rs 20,000 to fix the zebra crossing, saying they could only proceed with payment. Choosing not to respond to this demand, Stany sought the help of the traffic police instead.

With support from the traffic police, Stany decided to take matters into their own hands. They purchased paint and created the zebra crossing themselves. Jerry Lobo, Mihir Dixit, and members of the traffic police provided their cooperation in this effort.

Thanks to this initiative, crossing the road has become significantly easier and safer for the public. Stany expressed his disappointment with the national highway authorities, pointing out that while they collect substantial tolls from the public, they hesitate to undertake such essential tasks.

"I have shown them that even tasks they claim are impossible can be done," remarked Stany Bantwal, demonstrating his dedication to public safety.

Good job Stany Bantwal, but do the pedestrians or drivers/ riders know why the zebra crossing is there on the road. Pedestrians should know that they should only cross the road were there is zebra crossing. On the other hand drivers/ riders should slow down or even wait for pedestrians to cross the road. Hope this is a eye opener for MCC to mark all zebra crossings and road humps (speed breakers).

Speed breakers, speed limits, ample warning boards and hefty fines for violations combined with a little civic sense of road users( both pedestrians and drivers) can save lots of lives. It is proven well in many countries that If these rules are implemented strictly ( not as bribe earling tools), fatality on roads can be reduced significantly.

Great service to humanity. This awareness is missing. In Mumbai we have terrible difficult crossing even at school junctions, hospitals, churches or temples. Drivers do not care. A good job done by Stany. Thank you. God bless you. The Municipal corporation must also install speed breakers with zebra lining on the humps. That will make it foolproof control of the traffic.
