St Agnes College organises seminar on 'Skin Health Awareness among Teenagers'

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jan 23: St Agnes College hosted a seminar on 'Skin Health Awareness among Teenagers' on January 18 organized by the department of microbiology in collaboration with the youth red cross unit. The seminar aimed to educate young individuals about maintaining healthy skin and managing common dermatological conditions.

The resource person for the event was Dr Malcolm Pinto, MD, a professor in the department of dermatology at Yenepoya (Deemed to be University) and a consultant dermatologist at Yenepoya Specialty Hospital. Dr Pinto, a specialist in skin, hair, nail, and sexually transmitted diseases, delivered an engaging and informative session.

The seminar began with an introduction to the largest organ of the human body—the skin—and its essential role in protecting and regulating the body. Dr Pinto elaborated on several common skin conditions, including xeroderma (dry skin), fungal infections like ringworm and tinea, and provided practical skincare advice such as moisturizing immediately after bathing.

Participants were advised against using hot water for showers, as excessive heat can damage the skin, and cautioned against using products like dettol on the skin. Practical tips included avoiding tight clothing such as jeans that may exacerbate skin issues.

Dr Pinto also addressed scalp psoriasis, precautions for managing dandruff, and effective measures to tackle acne vulgaris (pimples). The session included valuable insights into hair loss prevention through general measures and treatment options.

The seminar was coordinated by Aileen Nataleen D'Rozario and Prajwal Rao, with Tanisha Shaktawat serving as the emcee for the event. Shreya Ravi NK delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Dr Pinto for his enlightening talk and to everyone who contributed to the seminar's success.

The event was attended by Froidy and Divya, along with an enthusiastic audience of students and faculty members. The seminar left participants better informed about caring for their skin and inspired to adopt healthier skincare practices.

This initiative reflects the college’s commitment to promoting health awareness and holistic development among its students.
