St Agnes School (CBSE), Bendur, marked the 76th Republic Day with immense fervour and reverence on January 26. The occasion commemorated the adoption of India’s Constitution and the birth of the Republic, celebrating the enduring spirit of patriotism, unity, and cultural pride. Students, faculty, and parents gathered to honour the democratic ideals that define the nation.
The day’s celebrations commenced with a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony, as the national tricolour was raised amidst the stirring strains of the national anthem, filling the atmosphere with deep respect and national pride.
The esteemed chief guest for the occasion, Clement Saldanha, a former army officer, was escorted to the venue by the school band, accompanied by principal Sr Maria Sarika AC, PTA vice-president Liston Derrick D’Souza, vice-principal Sr Meena Fernandes AC, KG coordinator Sr Letitia Lobo AC, and other esteemed faculty members, whose presence added grace to the event.
The celebration began with a heartfelt prayer service, invoking blessings for peace, prosperity, and unity. A graceful prayer dance further enriched the spiritual ambience, followed by an energetic welcome dance that set a joyful tone for the proceedings.
Coral Rasquinha warmly greeted the gathering and introduced the chief guest, Clement Saldanha, who dedicated 24 years of unwavering service to the Indian Army. Saldanha had served in various challenging roles, including deployments in the border regions of Jammu & Kashmir. He was an integral part of Operation Vijay during the Kargil War, Operation Parakram, and Operation Zafran following the 2014 Pulwama attack. A talented sportsman, he also excelled in volleyball, winning numerous accolades. His leadership, wisdom, and compassion inspired countless soldiers, and his contributions to the Indian Army remain invaluable.
The principal, Sr Maria Sarika AC, graciously welcomed the chief guest with a potted plant, while PTA vice-president D’Souza was honoured with a blooming plant by Snehal S G Clarissa Rodrigues eloquently spoke on the significance of Republic Day, reflecting on the sacrifices made by India’s leaders and the importance of safeguarding freedom and democracy.
The cultural programme that followed was a lively and colourful tribute to India’s rich and diverse heritage. A poignant skit by the students highlighted the significance of the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, emphasising freedom, equality, and justice. A captivating dance performance symbolised India’s unity in diversity, with students dressed in traditional attire from various states, showcasing the strength of the nation’s harmonious coexistence.
A heartfelt tribute was paid to the soldiers of India, honouring their courage and sacrifices. This was followed by a spirited patriotic dance that embodied collective pride and love for the nation, leaving the audience in awe of the students’ energy and enthusiasm.
In his address, chief guest Clement Saldanha praised the students for their exceptional performances and spoke about the importance of contributing to the nation’s progress. He urged the students to be responsible citizens, upholding democratic values and striving towards a brighter and more prosperous future for India. Encouraging the youth, he stressed the importance of taking responsibility for the nation’s advancement, emphasising that waiting for the future is not an option.
In recognition of his invaluable contributions to the nation, principal Sr Maria Sarika AC honoured Saldanha with a shawl as a symbol of appreciation. Liston Derrick D’Souza, PTA vice-president, presented a garland as a mark of respect, while assistant school pupil leader Cleona Saldanha presented a memento, and teacher Monisha graciously offered a fruit basket to the chief guest as a token of gratitude for his service to the nation.
In addition to the Republic Day celebrations, the winners of the district-level inter-school badminton tournament and the Republic Cup 2025, were felicitated. Jehaan Isir, Renisha Vanya Mathias, and Priyanka Ann Correa, who secured second place in the Under-17 category, were honoured by the chief guest, inspiring students to excel in their pursuits.
The event was compered by Snehal S G, with Coral Rosario extending a warm welcome to the dignitaries, and Deanna Sarah Lasrado delivering the vote of thanks, expressing sincere gratitude for the event’s success.
The cultural programme, thoughtfully organised by students from grades IV C, IV D, and IX B, was brought to life under the insightful guidance of their class teachers. To conclude, vice principal Sr. Meena A C presented a memento to the chief guest as a gesture of the school’s deep appreciation for his presence.
The notice board, creatively decorated by Ankita Khatua, Izma Fathima, and Naisha J of grade VIII D, showcased their love for the nation, adding a personal touch to the occasion. The celebrations concluded with the distribution of sweets, leaving everyone with a profound sense of pride in the freedom India enjoys and a deep appreciation for the sacrifices that have shaped the nation’s sovereign republic.
