Udupi, Jan 26: On the occasion of Republic Day and Bible Sunday, a grand food fest organised by the Missionary Children's Society of St Anne’s Church, Thottam, caught public attention. The unique aspect of the event was that it was entirely led by children, aimed at supporting underprivileged children. The event was held in the church hall and showcased the enthusiasm and compassion of young minds.
Inaugurating the fest, parish priest Fr Dennis D'Sa said, “The children of the church have taken the lead in organising this food fest with the noble intention of supporting the education of underprivileged children. Students from classes 3 to 10 prepared and brought snacks and dishes from their homes to sell here. The proceeds from this event will be used to aid the education of needy children. This initiative deserves immense appreciation.”
He emphasised the importance of instilling values of compassion, sharing, and helping others at a young age. “When such values are sown in children early, they grow into individuals who bring significant change to society. Promoting these values in every home can create a more equal and harmonious society,” he added.
The venue resembled a marketplace, with counters set up and children enthusiastically selling their homemade delicacies. Around 50 children, with the support of their parents, prepared a wide variety of food items. Church devotees, parents, and peers supported the cause by purchasing and enjoying the food.
Snacks like fried rice, noodles, burgers, dumplings, chicken chili, spring rolls, pani puri, sandwiches, fruit bowls, coffee, tea, lemon mint juice, idli with chicken sukka, and several other dishes made the event lively and appealing. The children’s energy added a festive charm to the market-like atmosphere.
Visitors were drawn to the event, with many purchasing items to support the noble cause. The children ensured cleanliness and order, arranging their stalls systematically. Even casual visitors couldn’t resist the temptation to taste the delicacies on display.
The event was graced by Sunil Fernandes, vice president of the Church pastoral council; Blessilla Crasta, secretary; Vanitha Fernandes, coordinator of the 20 commissions; the Sisters of St Anne’s Convent, and several church devotees.
