Mangalore, January 6:  Dr Abraham Joseph, former special adviser of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of East Timor and former Senior Economic Affairs Officer, UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste visited AIMIT , St Aloysius College, here on Thursday January 5 and spoke to the large gathering of students of MBA and IT programmes on the role of UN and the millennium development goals  of UN. 

Baijnath Pandy welcomed the guest and  Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, director, AIMIT, welcomed the guest and introduced him to the audience.

In his speech, Dr Abraham Joseph spoke of the various organs  of UN and their role. He spoke of human development and the seven goals- known as MDGs ( Millennium Development Goals) and how UN tries to achieve these goals in various countries. He also spoke of 48 indicators which help in assessing the MDGs in various countries.  He mentioned about three categories of countries: Least Developed Countries (LDCs) which are fifty in number; Land Locked Countries (LLCs) which are  thirty in number and small island countries,  and the  problems  they face,  and how UN tries to help them. He said “terrorism, aids and global warming are three serious threats which we face today and we have to do something to counter these threats."

Dr Abraham went around the campus of AIMIT and was very much appreciative of the world class facilities offered for the education of youth.  He was very much interested in having International students attend the programs offered by AIMIT. Jun Abraham, son of Dr Abraham, who is a specialist in environmental issues also accompanied Dr Abraham.
