Bangalore: Religious Heads Urge Government to Ban Made Snana

Bangalore, Jan 8 (DHNS): The demand for a total ban on Made Snana - the controversial ritual of people rolling on leftovers of food partaken by upper caste persons gained strength on Saturday, when 18 heads of religious institutions across the state came together to condemn the practice.

“If Made Snana can cure diseases effectively, the state government should close down all the medical colleges and hospitals, and set up Subramanya temples at every nook and corner of the State, where the patients can roll on the plantain leaves with food leftovers by the Brahmins,” said Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swami of Sanehalli, speaking at a conference organised by the Nidumamidi Mahasamsthana Mutt and Manava Dharma Peetha.

The programme, organised to create public opinion against the tradition, attracted a large gathering.

An age-old ritual at Kukke Subramanya Temple in Dakshina Kannada, Made Snana is performed by people with skin and other diseases who roll on the leftovers food on banana leaves, eaten by the Brahmins.

There was much public outrage at the controversial tradition, when newspaper carried pictures and TV channels footage of people performing the ritual, prompting calls for its ban.

Panditaradhya Shivacharya, the most vocal of the Made Snana opponents at the meeting, said the practice has been kept alive to suppress the dalits and to foster their sense of inferiority.

“Who else will roll on the leftovers of the Brahmins? It’s not Brahmins, nor any other higher castes but only Dalits. I tell you that people rolling on the plantain are prone to many dangerous diseases. This evil is not less than Sati tradition and child marriage and the government must act tough,” the Swamy said and criticised the head of the Pejawar mutt for equivocating on the issue.

Tontada Siddalinga Swami of the Tontadarya Mahasamsthana Mutt pointed out the irony of a medieval ritual practiced in Dakshina Kannada which has 90 per cent literacy rate. He also took a jibe at Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya for observing that the controversial ritual is a matter of faith.

“Made Snana is the biggest crime against humanity. This is not only sinful but illegal too. Those who roll and those who allow others to roll should be sent behind the bars,” said the Thontadarya seer.

Veerabhadra Channamalla Swami of Nidumamidi Mutt described the ritual as shameful. “We call for a change in society, wanting to retain this rotten tradition. The leaders should say whether they are for change or superstition,” he said.Chandrashekharanath Swami of Okkaligara Mahasamsthana Mutt said the ritual violated human dignity and urged the government to stop it immediately.

People from various sections of the society were present at the meeting to convey their opposition to the tradition.

No upper caste hindu's support made stan. its voluntary act by devotees. We have no right to stop it by force unless Gvot brings in a legislation to ban such out dated practices. but there are blind beliefs in other communities too like many Christians also believe in superstitious like go to italy there is a christian sect whihc beats itself with nail laiden whips to punish themselves for sins. Same way in Muslims during certian festivals they beat themselves with a whip and shed thier blood on this holy land, stavr during ther day and gorge during night producing large quantities on methane here.. Along with this let the Government ban all these horrible practices and beliefs to make india a progressive country.

To shut the mouth of commentators those who are supporting this unhyginic bath, They must be forced to undergo such treatments to have a personal experience. Preaching is very simple but practicing what preached is little bit difficult. Any one can give supportive comment sitting comfortably in his AC room fitted with all electronic gadgets. Those who really undergone such bath as a ritual part, might be rushing towards nearest river with dettol soap to clean the body from the stinking smell.

    Harsha Malhotra,

Please clarify why Malhotras had to upgrade themselves from Kshatriyas to Brahmana caste ? Is it because if Made-Snaana will be a practice in Punjab, you will be the one leaving the 'MADE' not the one rolling over it ?

Good thinking, Good initiate, and Good support for the humanity but there are many more like wise things are there in India and still many people are practicing them. Due to such evil blind believes many families are still uneducated, poor, and forced to do all low profile jobs. We must see the scientific reason and act accordingly so our life will be better, peaceful, and prosperous.

Mr. KP Prabhu, Madey Snana is without compulsion on the devotees. Alcohol also is not forced on anyone. Why Roll on left overs of Brahmins, why not it be on the left overs of Dalits ? Both are human beings and are created by God.

In todays soceity the biggest enemy of mankind is alcoholism.Lakhs of youths are getting ruinrd because of this menace.Government and vested interest are least bothered about the magnitude of damage done by alcoholism.Reason is money and money only.Gandhiji advocated prohibition and his followers are hell bent upon to destroy the masses by propagating alcoholism.Yet our Matadhipathis, progressive minded forces in the soceity have become dumb and deaf for this menace of eating humanity.Made snsn till recently was because of the religious beliefs and without any compulsion on the devotees who perform it with utter surrender to the presiding deity. Now all of a sudden how come this thinking of bringing brahmin sect into the contravercy.A large number of brahmins too take part in this ritual.Whether these matadhipathis have guts to identify similar acts /rituals prevailing in other communities and raise voice against them?Definitely not.Today progressive minded people target only Hindu religion though they may be wearing sffron.Instead of giving statements/press meets please do something to thawrt alcoholism in the soceity first. Then we can say that your concern for humanity /downdrodden is genuine.

This write up clearly mentioned what is " Made Snana ".

The leftovers of the Brahmins on the plantain leaves & people rolling in order to cure skin diseases.

Appreciate the timely condemnation of this controversial, sub standard, divisive, degrading human being practise of " Made Snana " by the 18 heads of religious institutions across the state.
Man want to live in dignity and all should be treated in equality.
Wish Govt. of Karnataka will ban this controversial, sub human practise of " Made Snana ".

Very good initiative and good movement. The movement must catch momentum and spread across the country where this henious practice is being forced on low castes. In my home town of Kukkikatte, this madesnana is being practiced under the supervision of Udupi mutts and I feel here too the tradition needs to be blocked. If there is a sanction in the holy books, I shall not go against it, but they should prove it to the masses...
