Mangalore, Jan 9: ‘Raaga Sudha Rasa’, a four-day series of musical programmes which includes Carnatic and Hindustani classical music forms, got going at Ravindra Kalabhavan of University College here on Sunday January 8. The programme, which will be on between January 8 and 11, is being held under the aegis of state Kannada and culture department, Bharatiya Vidyabhavan, and Manikrishna Swamy Academy.

The programme was inaugurated by Sharavu Raghavendra Shastri, managing trustee of Sharavu Lord Mahaganapati Temple here. President of Manikrishna Swamy Academy and MLC, Capt Ganesh Karnic, Kannada and culture department representative, Sudhakar Shetty, journalist, Govind D Belgaonkar, artiste, Nagesh A Bappanadu, and secretary of the academy, P Nityananda Rao, were present.

On Sunday, four musical programmes were presented. The first to be staged was Hindustani vocal by young talent from the district, Nagakiran Nayak. He was ably supported by Katapadi Satvijay Bhat on tabhla, and Padubidri Shankar Shenoy on harmonium.  The second on the line was Hindustani classical singing by Piyu Sarkel from Indore. Udayaraj Karpur from Bangalore on tabla, and Narendra L Nayak from the city on harmonium, provided musical accompaniment.

Coming together of two different styles of Carnatic singing was observed in the third performance of the day by Pattabhirama Pandit and G Ravikiran from Bangalore. Their performance was assisted by Vittala Rama Murty from Chennai on tabla, as well asH S Sudhindra and K U Jayachandra from Bangalore on Mridangam. Mysore M Nagaraj and Pandit Pravin Godkhindi presented a fusion of violin and Bansuri thereafter.

On the occasion, the award, ‘Yuva Kalamani – 2012’, was presented to emerging talent from the district, Prarthana Sai Narasimhan. The award comprises a gold medal and cash component of Rs 10,000.
