AI-based cameras to monitor traffic violations on state, national highways in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Feb 4: The transport department is considering the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based cameras on state and national highways to monitor traffic violations by motorists.

Tracking traffic violations on highways has been challenging due to the lack of surveillance cameras. To address this issue, the transport department has decided to implement AI technology. AI-based cameras are already being installed on highways across five districts in Karnataka, with specific locations identified. Offenders will receive fines through an online system.

The cameras are being installed in Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kolar, and Ramanagara districts. These locations have been identified by the Union Transport and Highways Department as accident-prone zones and areas with frequent traffic violations. A total of 20 black spots have been identified across the five districts.

The AI-based cameras will detect various violations, including speeding, jumping red lights, two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets, and four-wheeler drivers not wearing seat belts. The cameras will scan vehicle registration numbers and also help identify vehicles involved in criminal activities. A command center will be established to monitor and store footage.

E-challans will be sent to offenders via email or SMS, and fine collection will be monitored by the command center.

Initially, AI-based cameras will be installed in various locations across five districts. In Bengaluru Rural district, they will be placed on Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur Road, Nelamangala, Dabaspet, Hoskote, Hoskote-Gauribidanur Road, H-Cross, and Doddaballapur. Mysuru district will see installations on Ooty Road, Kadakola APMC, T Narasipura, Mysuru-HD Kote Road, and Mysuru-Hunsur Road. In Kolar district, the cameras will be set up in Kolar City, Kolar-Bangarpet Road, and Kolar-Srinivasapura Road. Tumakuru district will have them on Kunigal Road, Sira, and Kunigal-Tumakuru Road near Maralu Kere. Meanwhile, in Ramanagara district, the cameras will be installed on Ramanagara-Channapatna Road, Ramanagara-Kanakapura Road, and Harohalli-Sathanur Road.
