Kasargod, Feb 6: A leopard that had been causing fear in the Bandadka-Kolathur area for the past two weeks was caught in a trap set for a wild boar inside a tunnel. However, the leopard managed to escape before forest department officials could capture it. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening.

A private individual had set a trap (snare) inside a tunnel, intending to catch a wild boar. The leopard, which had entered the tunnel to drink water, got caught in the trap. When local residents heard the leopard's growls in the evening, they discovered the animal trapped inside the tunnel and immediately informed forest officials.

A team of forest department experts, along with a tranquilizer squad and a Rapid Action Force team, arrived at the scene. Early in the morning, when they attempted to tranquilize the leopard, it escaped with the snare still attached. Forest department officials and locals are now conducting a search operation to locate the escaped leopard.

The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, as the leopard had been roaming the area for weeks, posing a threat to the community. Authorities are on high alert to ensure the safety of locals and to safely capture the animal.

The Tiger population in forest areas of the Muliyar Bandaduka region is rising rapidly causing a menace to the public. The tigers when they olf order can't prey and stray to villages and hunt cows hens and sometimes even human beings. Hence efforts must be made to relocate injured old tigers to safe areas. The forest Dept must have sharpshooters who can immobiliser these tigers by way of tranquilisers and adequate action must be taken to protect these animals I am sure the government of Kerala shall look into this matter seriously. Tigers must be protected but humans also need protection from wild animals. In areas of Bandaduka etc wild animals like Elephants are causing severe damage to crops.
