Bantwal, Feb 8: While many contribute to society in their own ways, some remain unnoticed despite their impactful efforts. Mohammed Kunhi and his wife Kunjapathu from Manila village are prime examples of this quiet service. Their hard work has transformed their village, even if the recognition they deserve has eluded them.

Lighting the path for education

Born into a large family with limited resources, Mohammed Kunhi had little opportunity for formal education. However, with the help of a local teacher, he learned to read and write.

While running a small shop in Kamajalu, he saw children from marginalised communities struggling to access education. Determined to change this, he began teaching them in his shop, which eventually blossomed into a full-fledged school. His tireless efforts led to the establishment of a government school in the village, benefiting generations of children. Today, the school, which celebrated its silver jubilee, educates 36 children, thanks to his relentless dedication.

Bus service crusader

Kunjapathu, equally dedicated to community service, fought a long battle to bring a government bus service to her village. With irregular private buses causing constant trouble for schoolchildren and commuters, she took matters into her own hands.

After months of negotiations and setbacks, her perseverance paid off, and the government agreed to provide three buses for the region. Locals affectionately know her as the "Bus Lady" for her successful campaign, which has greatly eased transportation in the village.

Legacy of change

While their efforts have yet to receive widespread acclaim, the couple’s contributions have had a lasting impact. Hundreds of children are now educated, and thousands of people travel safely thanks to their tireless efforts. It's time society recognises these unsung heroes who have changed lives without seeking the spotlight.
